Word on the street is that the Utah State Parks Dept had a meeting last week and that the possibly of hunting Mule Deer is back on the table. This time it was the state that is proposing the Issue. The island has been losing money and they now figure that this will generate a "positive" income for the Island. Go FIgure!!!!

I would like to see one happen, actually 2 tags, one for auction and one for public draw. That would take some serious pressure off of some of the other LE Deer units, and I can't see that liiking 2 Bucks is going to hurt the population any. Plus its 3 min from my house so when I draw it..........(yeah right)

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

It would not be much of a hunt as there is no place for the deer to go only one ridge to the other not many trees just a lot of rock sage and tall grass but to each his own I guess it would be a easy way to get your 200+ buck

But I would Love to hunt coyotes there

I have worked out there some, and I went out on the antler hunt last spring and I think the island is bigger and allows more escape routes and hiding places than you are giving it credit for. It is quite open, but there are some really steep, rocky, cliffy areas and it is a lot bigger than you think. There are also not much motorized access. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it would be too hard to kill a good buck out there, but I also don't think a hunt would violate the standards of fair chase. I hiked my guts out all day on the antler hunt and only covered a small chunk of the island. I'd take the tag with no ethical reservations.

HOW MANY TARDS ON WHEELERS WOULD IT TAKE TO TOTALLY DESTROY IT???

THEY COULD CHASE THEM FROM ONE END OF THE ISLAND TO THE OTHER & BACK AGAIN!!!

THE ONLY bobcat!!!

You are probably rite but I am SURE you could get a buck in the 200+ gross mark in just a matter of days if they did have such a hunt

I am not saying I would not be tempted to put my name in the hat for a tag as I know I would but it just would not be the same as getting a big buck on say the Henrys or the Book Cliffs units

Call me dumb and you will be rite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck all in the 2007 draws!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UThunting,

I agree with you that it would be a slam dunk for a 200 incher, and that it would be a lot different than shooting a big buck on the Book Cliffs or Pauns. You definitely have a point, I just wanted to make the point to folks that think an Antelope Island hunt would be like shooting fish in a barrel that the island is a lot bigger (42 square miles) and rougher than folks realize. That being said, the deer are pretty tame, but with a little hunting pressure that would probably change. Take it easy.

anyone know how the shed hunt works do you have to sign up, is it a draw, I'm sure they limit how many can go, Any information that you can PM me Thanks.'

Yep you know the one where the few and the proud got to go in first and find the biggest horns, I'm just wondering if they are going to have a return gig. How do you get on the list to go.

Last year I just called the park office and got signed up for the antler hunt. I thought it was fun, but for me it was a one time deal. My buddies and I found several nice whites, and there were some big browns picked up, but once was enough for me. That island got combed and I think a large chunk of the whites got picked up last spring. There are about 400 deer on the island, half of them are bucks, so there are about 400 brown antlers out there. Of those 400, some are small, and some are big. 400 antlers might sound like a lot, but when you can't really scout and don't know where the deer dropped and you take off on a 42 square mile island and hope you might run into some 400 suddenly doesn't seem like that much. You never know though, you might find a 200"+ set. Good luck to you.

I didn't know the island was 42 square miles--I know of a couple of units here in CO that don't have 42 square miles of public land.

Looks like a good additional public hunting oportunity to me, and if it's neccessary to manage the herd on the island then I'm all for it even though I would not apply for it myself.

Plus, the state gets to keep the island open to the public from the revenue generated... Who loses?

If it's about managing the deer herd it's a good option too. Transplanting critters is a dicey deal--you can't just use the antler genetics card and instantly it's a good idea. For example, there may be some disease/parasite that the Antelope Island deer have no resitance to and deer else where have always been exposed to and have been naturally selected to survive with. Transplanting deer from the island could actually hurt other herds and there's really no way of knowing without doing it.
