Utah vs. other states

I had this thought while I was attending the hunting show in SLC a couple weeks ago.
Colorado DWR had a small but nice display showing some nice animals and promoting hunting in Colorado.
I also noted that New Mexico had a simular display showing nice animals and showing off what a great state it was to come and hunt.
However Utah DWR only shows the Help stop poaching trailer everywhere they go. I see no "sales pitch" to come hunt a great state, just "we have a big poaching problem".
I am not supporting poaching at all, I am against it.
I think that Utah DWR could help once in a while by relating to the general public that Utah has some very possitve hunting not just poachers.
Seems the more of the DWR I visit with the more their attitude is that we are all poachers and they treat you that way.
Just my thoughts.
Like to hear yours.

Interesting observation, I'm thinking that UDWR didn't feel compelled to promote their wares since the folks that had traveled from other states were pre-qualified for having a desire to hunt Utah as displayed by their presence.
On your other point of Utah's agents attitude compared to those from other states I agree 100%

I don't think Utah wants non resident hunters. I think they feeel they are over crowded as it is. If they wanted NR hunters they would make it a little easier for them to have a chance at the convention tags, just for starters.

we dont need more out of state hunters... the chances of drawing a tag for a NR is already tough enough! WHers colorado you can pick up an over the counter tag for elk for alot of archery hunts.... New mexico you have a good chance at drawing a tag.. I put in NM last year for the first time and drew a good bull tag in th Gila Nationa Forest.

If you have attended other shows out side of Utah you will find that Utah will have a display similar to the other states at the recent show.

A question for you, why would UDWR need to have a booth marketing and promoting hunting in Utah with a few more trophy heads when that is what the show was all about. There were dozens of UT outfitters there showing what you can get in Utah, why would they want to compete or compare with that? I guess they could have had a booth with bunch of yearling bucks mounted showing what our deer herd looks like though.

Good point, I have not been to a show outside of Utah.
I just think that as a Utah resident thinking that the DWR is incharge of big game that there involvement would reflect more than poaching. Not only to non-resident but to the resident. From my perspective if you want a good buck/bull in Utah hire a guide or buy a tag from a CWMU they are the ones that are "making" the hunting good in Utah not the DWR. OR you go poach one they looked good too.
(....."There were dozens of UT outfitters there showing what you can get in Utah, why would they want to compete or compare with that?".....)
Why would the DWR not want to compete and act like they have some envolvement other than poaching?
Is that all Utah has to offer is yearling bucks for the average guy?
Do you have to have a bunch of money and hire a outfitter and/or buy his tag?

I am not just refering to the NR but what about residents that are interested in hunting Utah. All the DWR has to show is poached or ran over animals. Not any picture or animals that have been taken or are alive that the average guy can access. I stand corrected if I am wrong, I do not see it.
Or is there not anything in Utah for the average guy, is it all big money or outfitters not DWR?

Whats to promote! Trophy deer hunting sucks. Elk, Moose, Sheep, Goats, are as good as any where, but the chances of drawing a permit in your lifetime are pretty slim. I think poaching is a real problem in Utard. Finding a big buck in Utah is a hard feat in itself, but trying to kill him before he gets poached is the real obstacle.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife's booth was empty and they didn't even attend. I'm not sure what you saw but the Colorado Division of Wildlife showed they didn't give a crap about a show that had representation by just about every other western state.

Sorry I can't jump on the bandwagon fellas, but last year on public ground I saw six 30" or better bucks on an open unit during the archery hunt. My son was able to get a shot at one of them but the wind drifted his arrow. The year before we saw four. The point I make is, Utah's open units all hold some dandy bucks, but because you don't see them all year long, doesn't mean they are not there. It also doesn't mean that the DWR isn't doing their job.
I have hunted all of the surrounding states on public ground for muledeer and I have yet to find anything that much better than what I find here.
So it's my humble opinion that Utah DWR doesn't need to go out of their way promoting something that is already pretty darn good. And if they did, we'd be complaining about even higher drawing odds.

Irony, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW)had booth at the Sportsmans show in Puyallup last weekend. They had a very nice Bull mount with a radio collar on it.....so they could keep track of which one of their officers had the bull displayed in their living room.

There are only two types of people - The Hunters and the hunted,
I hunt.

Nochawk hit the nail right on the head! I don't think they feel they really need to advertise in other states by themselves. I live in Texas and have never seen the UDWR trying to advertise here or in any magazines. However, almost ALL of the guide services do because they can get tags for their hunters easily enough that the UDWR never has a problem getting its number of NR hunters. I haven't really seen any Utah tourism ads either, I don't think it is part of the State's agenda, but I have seen alot of time share offers for condos and places in Utah. The ski resorts do their own advertising so the state doesn't need to.

I was impressed with all the booths the other western states had, except CO (they didn't show). The DWR had two booths at the show. One was the Help Stop Poaching trailer, and they had another next to the Utah FNAWS booth. At the second DWR booth they had copies of the odds booklet to show point breakdowns for drawing. They also had proclamations for big game, turkey, fish, and upland game. They had a rep. from the Dedicated Hunter Program there, and at two biologists from a different region every day to answer questions and make suggestions for units to put in for. I do however think that we could market NR tags better than we do, and I would like to see more general tags to go NR folks (and I am a resident). I just see the financial cushion selling 40% of the tags to NR hunters has giver the CO fish and game. It let them cut deer tags to the point where they acutally grow decent numbers of mature bucks in almost every unit.

Look Again

Not to burst any bubbles, but the DWR did have a very clean informational booth (compeletly removed and separate from poaching trailer) over on the far west wall. Big backdrop of many of the more special critters taken in the state in 2006.

May have missed it because there weren't antlers poking out everywhere.

Hell, I'd settle for a 20/80 split! But it's not going to happen unless hell freezes over.

NM is 78% residents and 22% for NR. Not sure how many of you feel but as a NM resident , I personally welcome NR to come and experiance this great state. Our elk and antelope hunts are very much top notch and pretty affordable for a NR tag fee compared to other states.
Also my experiance and knowledge of the harm and bad acts that are done here such as poaching, tossing beer can/bottles , trash and tras passing on private lands is more often done by locals/reisdents. I've seen more areas and property including trailers and trucks hampered and messed with by NM residents. When a NR spends money to come here to hunt , the intentions are just that , to hunt.
Now as for not wanting a NR to come to your state whether it be UT,AZ or where ever because there is just too many hunters as is , well now that becomes a Govt dept issue and units mismanaged. It happens here in NM TOO....

I'd love to hunt UT, YOUR ELK ARE GETTING BIGGER AND MORE OF THEM EVERY YEAR. AZ isn't the king of monster bulls anymore...

I would be in favor of a 80/20 split. More money for the DWR to use for fighting poachers.

I know I spent a ton of time in the NM booth. Great guy, had tons of info, desired to help, and gave me some great tips as to what NM offered. Kudos to NM and Officer Craig S.

Utah officers could have learned some PR skills from this guy.

ktc , was it Craig Sanchez. He works unit 9 and is very friendly and real helpful....

It was Craig Sanchez. He is a hell of a guy. Very friendly and helpful. Spoke to him once after on the phone and was helpful once again. I wish Utah's officers were as friendly and on the ball like Craig.

ktc - the friendly thing will never happen in Utah. Utah is notorious for being arses out there in the field. Even other DWR departments in other states know this. It's sad but true. The Wyoming guy running their booth was a standup guy as well.

It's always an adventure!!!
