I have been putting a little thought into the Utah deer situation. What do you think about trying the different ideas on sub units in Utah? Let's start by not breaking the state into 29 units but making a few sub units within the regions.
We already have one unit as a primitive weapon unit (the Wasatch). Utah DNR could do a herd study on the overall health of this sub unit. Look at deer numbers, buck to doe ratio, predator numbers, habitat and carrying capacity.
Make another sub unit where they close the hunt for a few years. Not the entire region but a small mountain range to again study the deer numbers, buck to doe ratio, predator numbers, habitat and carrying capacity.
In another area the DNR could try and wipe out the predators. Aggressively pursue cats, bears and yotes. They could again compare deer numbers, buck to doe ratio, predator numbers, habitat and carrying capacity.
One other unit could be used wherein the DNR looks at reducing elk numbers. They could again look at deer numbers, buck to doe ratio, predator numbers, habitat and carrying capacity.
Another unit the DNR could cut the number of roads etc. I think you get the idea. With about six or seven small sub units the DNR and the people of Utah could get an idea of what would actually work to best address the declining deer herds.
After about three years. I believe the time frame when the current deer plan has run its course; they would have a better idea as to what would work the best to bring the overall herd health back up.
JMO but I think Utah is in a knee jerk reaction time. The people of Utah deserve better deer management. Why not make a few study units and see what works best in Utah and then take the action needed to save the deer herds? In the long run I think Utah deer managment needs some major changes. I just think the changes implimented should be made with some research as to what is going to get the most bang for the buck so to speak.
There are several ideas that have been suggested on MM that I think are valid.
What do the people of MM think?
