Is anyone else doing anything to whip their butts in shape for scouting season and hunting? I expect to do a lot of backpacking this year, so I've been hitting it hard. Using an off-road tri as a motivator to get in awesome shape.
I'd like to reach the point that I can hustle up a mountain with a 60 lb. pack and not even feel it when I get there. ha ha

I'm looking forward to that mountain mile archery shoot this summer too. I want to do better. That was fun.

I have a sheep, grizz and moose hunt this fall in Alaska so i have been increasing my cardio. Run 3 miles every other night, on the off nights I do a 30 minute walk at 3.5 mph pace on a 5% incline. Still working the weight room on the nights I walk but I have increased my reps and decreased the weight. Should be 200 lbs of nothing but ribs and di** in no time.

Im still going to the gym....will move to the outdoors soon and do alot of hiking.

Going skate skiing tonite. The ultimate cardio workout for me. The balance, coordination and power aspects are a +++.

Most guys I know skip the balance and flexibility part. I do yoga - if only for the scenery. Sometimes I'm the only guy in the class. Hot wimmen in tights is never a bad thing.

I need to get my butt into gear but I have been doing a few long distance runs with my wife as she prepares for a half marathon.

Brian, I liked your video of the mountain mile shoot.

I've been running like....... 87 miles every night and bench press like.....2598 lbs a couple thousand times and I do insanity dvd's like the whole set twice a day. I need to ramp it up even more!

Ok, back to reality: I've been doing better with my eating. Actual eating lean deer, elk etc and lots of veggies, whole grains only and cutting out the treats. It's been working! I feel better and the weight has started getting into the "Spring" season range, which is managable going into Summer. I also have a weekly accountability goal which costs me $100 for every week I miss my goal. 3 weeks in and so far so good!

My knee doesn't let me pound the pavement like I've done for 30 years but I can still do a lot now the weather is better. I like the trails and can't wait to hit them. Oh, I have a turkey tag too. That will help.

Good luck to all of us,

Zeke

Lift weights and ride the Bike year round. The more I do the more I gain weight. I get stronger, but maintain the weight. Go figure.

I signed up a pretty intense race schedule to force me to get in shape...a handful of 5k, 10k, 13 mi races around eastern idaho and then 3 big trail races: Speedgoat 50k, Pocatello 20 mi, and Leadville.

Right now I'm getting in about 30 mi running a week mixed with one or two big shed hunting days...I have a long ways to go!!!

I used to get out of breath for breathing. Now I only get out out of breath when I eat. Haven't tried walking yet, sounds painful....

Training for st. George Ironman 70.3 swim, bike, run. Seems like it's all I do anymore. Every time I turn around there is another workout. It's good though. I would guess I swim 3 times a week, bike close to 100 miles, and run 25 a week. Feeling pretty good.
Running a couple half marathons and 2 marathons. Add in scouting trips with the pack and I should be in shape.

Good Times!

D@m, you guys are making me feel like s#!t.I need to get it in gear. I seem to gain 10-12 pounds every winter after the last November hunt.

Hope to draw a few good tags and need to get going early. This post may just get it started. Thanks, brian.

I go through periods of starting to get in shape and let life's demands get in the way. I'm going to give Crossfit a shot, both to have someone who will push me to the limit, but also to do so without injury (which is what I tend to do on my own). I will do some extra time on the incline trainer and then to the hills when snow clears a bit more. I need to drop a good 35 lbs.

Just found out I drew another AZ bull elk tag so the training will increase now! In 2011 when I drew my last bull tag I trained all summer with a 55 lb dumbbell strapped to my frame pack and hiked / ran as fast as I could on a 4 mile mountain dirt trail every day after work all through the summer. Started out at a pretty slow pace but after a few weeks I was literally running the mountains with 60 lbs on. It was entertaining to see how many people I could pass on this busy hiking trail. I would take the girlfriend and our dog out and she would try to outrun me but that just pushed me harder to keep up and it would wear her out before I gave in. That season got me back into good shape and I've kept it up since then and still lift free weights at least a couple times a week and run the mountains as often as possible. That training gave me legs and lungs that didn't let me down during my two week elk hunt in the high elevation. I'll keep at it and hopefully this year will be just as successful.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-13 AT 10:29AM (MST)[p]My winter routine. 60-90 minute force march every evening out in the hills. Works well for me until the snow melts off or the ground being a muddy mess where I can add running into the mix.

I spent the winter doing lift served telemark skiing and hitting a spin class three times a week. Now that spring is here I'll be road and mountain biking many times a week with a once a week Mt Garfield hike thrown in (2000' vertical in two miles). Sometimes I even get serious about being in shape.

I'm with BLooDTRaCKeR! Seriously though, good inspiration here. Plumped up like a raisin this winter and look forward to nicer weather to work it off. Been walking the dog more. She and I are both looking to shed some winter layers. Hiking and walking will be my main ways to workout and something I look forward to, but diet change is a must. May have to look into getting a yearly local gym membership so the task of getting fit is spread out over time instead of waiting until Spring.

Variety of workouts. I just bet someone at work I can run under a 7 minute mile, so now I will be training for that also. I've read and contributed to several fitness threads over the years, here's what I have found works for me in the past 4 I've been seriously training for mountain hunts:

Lungs - if you can't breathe, you can't do anything else, and living at sea leavel there is no way to train for elevation except to get your cardio up big time. To that end I run intervals. Several takes on it, but the one I do I sprint for 2 minutes, walk for 2 minutes, do that 8 times. It is the worst workout I do, its pure pain. After I start to get comfortable in that I will move it to the treadmill and do it all at incline, run 6.5-7 mph at a 6 degree incline for 2 min, then walk at 3.5 for 2 min.

Legs - gotta get ready to pack out what you tag. I do walking lunges, no weight at first then progress to having a pack with weight on. I also do timed ski squats to strengthen my quads. I climb stairs with 40-60 lbs of sandbags in my frame pack. When I can get up and down 1000 vertical feet of stairs with 40 lbs on my back, I consider myself in decent shape.

Upper body - just pushups and situps here, enough to stabilize big loads on your back.

I have also found I need to give my calves and thighs a day or two to recover after getting punished. On the off days I'll do nothing or just do a maintenence 3 mile run to get things loosened up, just jog for 30 minutes, don't push it too hard.

Other than that, keep drinking water and try not to each too much bad stuff and drink more scotch and less beer!

Good for you! A tri is on my bucket list. I am running "The Colorado Marathon" on May 5th. I am hoping that all this running is going to make for a easier hunt. Maybe I will actually be able to get in front of that herd bull this year!

I let her get her "O" face before me...EXHAUSTING! Hardest 5 minutes I've done since I was 19.

Did my normal hike up at the Ski resort this early AM.

No big deal-----

I truely believe that my winter workouts with lap swimming and snowshoeing really help keep me in shape year round.

179 lbs this morning...so no winter lard build up for me.

I do my full physical in mid-April with the fat content test....I am feeling like I may break 10% this spring as I have always been in the 11-12% most every April in the past.

Nothing wrong with huffing and puffing fella's---just keep at it!

Switched my routine up today from hiking to an actual run. Its not too muddy now where Im at now. Hamburger Hill is still as steep as I remember it being.

Getting ready to crank up the bowflex and elliptical again...I'm getting lazier in my old age...Would rather sit down with a crown and watch TV...everything hurt when I work out anymore!!!Chitz....

Government doesn't fix anything and has spent trillions proving it!!!
Let's face it...After Monday and Tuesday, even the calender says WTF!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-13 AT 03:50PM (MST)[p]I got a new hot chinese g/f for much needed motivation to amp up workouts. I call it my "asian persuasion". Wyoming elk tag in pocket also helps. Been running 20 miles per week, but pushing away from dining table is the most important. Been working in some roundball too.

Been doing a lot of shed hunting. Need to lose the 30lbs I gained since Nov last year.
Got some good hunts that I got to be ready for .

Just finished an 8 mile run tonight. That made the 116th day in a row that I've run for a total of 925 miles for an average of 8 miles a day. My first marathon is coming up next week, hoping to run it in a little under 4 hours.

>I'm seriously considering a switch to
>light beer..

Went to the Keystone Light!! Problem is you save money going to it which you then spend on donuts!! Life is a freaking challenge!!

Trapping in the winter, bear baiting in the spring helps me get going for the summer of scouting. It still seems like I still gain a little weight in the winter.hhahaha
