Has anyone hunted this unit? Looks like the early rifle season produces quite well and I would love a nice Roosevelt. I drove the unit recently and sort of dis-liked it mainly because I'm not sure how one would hunt it effectively? Looks like lots of dark timber and a little bit of prime river bottom. Does anyone know if these bulls are mainly taken on the private ground in this unit? Any comments would be great...

A few years ago a guy on here drew that tag and took a 4 point bull, there is another guy on the board Falcon who really wants the tag bad, hopefully this is his year. There are some nice bulls taken in there though.

The private land on the penninsula always produces somes nice bulls but the early rifle hunt on public land can be good to. This is a rut hunt (Oct 1-10) so the bulls can be located with a bugle or cow calls. Getting permision to hunt the lower vally might not even be possible for you unless you are an AHE grad as it is a special elk zone 6063, 6064 which is all of the private land east on highway 101. So asking for permission might not even be an issue unless you draw your tag and have your AHE card. thats all I know....

I dont think unless you have your AHE you cant even hunt it. they give out 5 tags. Do they have a regular hunt in that unit. And yes, Falcon knows quit a bit about this unit.

I believe that you can hunt it, but it does need to be on the public land as the private land is for AHE (the elk area listings will tell you for sure what the boundaries were)as was said earlier. I pondered this area last year but didn't end up hunting there. I am remembering this from last years regs haven't checked this years for that area. Most areas there are very thick, but if you're hunting via bugling, that shouldn't matter other than it makes covering ground a bit difficult.

Good Luck
Mike

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like Falcon is the guy, if he's interested in helping. I do know that the early season is for AHE grads which I am. I'm also going into the draw this year with 9 bonus points so I really want to be confident in an area before I burn them...

There is quite abit of private land in that unit, but alot of it is owned by timber companies and 1 landowner in the valley who shall remain nameless. I kid you not. He patrols the valley likes he owns it all. There is limited access to the river bottom. The park lines on the Northern side are poorely marked and is patrolled by the park rangers. Rumor has it there is one park official who camos out in hopes of busting a AHE hunter in the park. If you want a big rosie, this is a great unit, but you have no qarantee during the rut hunt you will connect on a big guy. The elk tend to run for the park at first light, so you have to be in the right place at the right time to connect on one. I have been in on a couple of the permit hunts, and also spend time with my 2 partners who are archery hunters. If you are after more action, I would say the Little Naches early hunt would give you quite abit more action with huge opportunity at a mature bull. Good luck in the draw.
Nine points is alot of power!

My group and I hunted over there a few yers ago and you need calks to get down into the river bed and run them thats where all the elk are.

Falcon,
Thanks for the info. I can't believe you said it but Little Naches is already on my mind, applied there last year. Any bull is a good bull it's just the appeal of a big Rosie that makes me look to the peninsula. A few months ago there was a picture in F&H news of a guy who had drawn that tag, the result was a very nice 6x6 laying on a gravel bar. I'm assuming he was just above the private land and adjacent to the park. Like you said, he was probably in the right place at the right time. Have you checked the harvest in there from last season? 100% success!!

Don't get me wrong. You draw that tag and hunt it hard, you are almost quaranteed a bull. You need a little luck for the big guy. It kinda sucks when you see big bulls on some of the private property and its pretty much hands off. The locals are nice enough, but just about every year someone in the valley who is one of their own draws one of the coveted tags and has dibs on the choice land. Thats the way it is, but there is still enough gravel bar to go around. Good luck on what ever unit you choose. If you draw, I will point you in the right direction.
