Is a 308 good cal. for elk?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-06 AT 09:00AM (MST)[p]Yup. Use a premium 165 grain bullet and you will have no trouble. You might also try one of the 'hot' loads like Light Magnum from Hornady or HE from Federal. They allegedly (i've never chrono'd the HE loads I use in my 06) yield up to 200fps extra.

Put the bullet in the right spot and all will go well. I would use Barnes Triple Shocks...they will put'em down quick!

I concur with Beanman. I love the .308, though
I've never shot an elk with one. A smartly consructed
165 grain bullet (the ol' Partition would be perfect)
and a good shoot in the lungs should take care of
bidness, with the quickness.

My Remington Model 7 SS in 7mm-08 was death and destruction on cows and spikes, and easy to carry all day in the timber! Never got to try it on a big bull. Hot handloads of IMR 4064 and 140 Nosler Solid Bases proved exceptional. I don't know why a 165 in a 308 wouldn't just be great also, especially if loaded hot like the above post mentioned.

Blank,
The old Solid Bases were some of the best bullets
ever made. The 140's you're refering to used to be
my favorites in .280 rem. The 7-08 is an excellent
round. People cuss it, but don't really understand it.
It's excellent for what it was intended for.

I agree wholeheartily! When they discontinued them, the local chain stores sold them all out for about $5.00 a box to get rid of them. I bought every box in 25, 270, 7MM, and 30 cal. that they had, and am still reloading and shooting them. I may be talked into believing that the new Barnes TSX is every bit as good tho, from the last two years performance on deer, elk, and antelope. Want to try it in Africa this Spring, and I will finalize my judgement! :)
