Unit 3 antelope and huge coyotes

LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-16 AT 05:06PM (MST)[p]I hunted unit three successfully this weekend, tagged a medium buck. Opening morning I was on a ridge just below the Godiva Rim before the sun came up, the goats I had glassed at last light Friday were gone. I saw movement about a half mile away and glassed it. There were six of the largest coyotes I have ever seen. They were also very dark gray, one was charcoal colored. Three were laying down. After watching them for five minutes the leader took off down the trail and the rest lined up in single file and followed the leader out of sight. I've been hunting coyotes for thirty years and never seen this behavior in six coyotes before. Also odd were no young or sub adults. We were ten miles south of the Wyoming border. Mighty odd for yotes, don't you think?

Weren't able to ground check one? Seen em work in groups before trying to coax my dogs out. Congrats on the goat!

Kinda figured that's what you were drivein at. Be up in that country myself in a couple wks. I'll keep my ears open.

There has been "unofficial" sightings of a pack on the Colorado/Utah boarder south of Rangely. This was about 3 weeks ago.

My money is on Coyotes. We were hunting all season north of the border in WY. We saw 17 coyotes in one packs this fall. I killed one out of a group of 8. We saw another pack of nine. All larger groups. It seems like every fall the coyotes are grouped up in large packs, but by the time we start calling they in pairs or small groups of 3 to 4. But during September and October we will always see large groups.

All September we never saw a single coyote every time we saw one we could find at least 5 or 6 with with it.

Also knowing the country you are talking about, I would be surprised if any would be left (a hole lot SSS in that area occurs as it does just north in WY and Also in the near by UT areas).

Not that is could not happen, but I also know the Government trapper that lives north of Craig and so far in all his wanderings he has only crossed paths in North Park and had a single show up in Browns park area.

My single coyote I killed this weekend was big and very healthy. I am guessing he tipped the scale right at 50 pounds. When I held him by his Hind feet level to my shoulder his nose was on the ground.

96,

I hope you are right and you most likely are. I was at least a half mile away and had 8X binoculars so this was far from being definitive. I just have never seen coyotes jump up and line up, then walk off in single file before. There were plenty of coyotes yipping in the pre-dawn dark when I hiked in there.

I found a small 5 by 5 elk deadhead, probably winterkill, which got added to my landscape which is always a bonus.

At MM 10 on county rd. 21 you can make a left down to the river and look at a center pivot field of alfalfa. My Father inlaw and I spent Saturday evening sitting there. It's across the river so is in unit 2. I counted at least 50 head of deer, about an equal number of pronghorn, and saw three elk, one of which was a nice large bull with either broken 4ths or genetics that made small ones. Dang those 8x binos, I should have brought something bigger. It's a cool spot to sit and watch since we were done hunting. I'm sure you know of it.

And, I'm thinking of making a calling trip up there for yotes since I heard and saw enough to whet my interest.
