Second Choice Bonus Point

I think I am confusing Arizona with another state, but I thought I heard somewhere that points are NOT forfeited if you draw your second choice. Is that the case? The regulations say they are forfeited if you draw a tag in a computer drawing.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-10-15 AT 03:32PM (MST)[p]WY you keep your points if draw a second choice. I always thought in AZ you lost them, even for 3-4-5 choice.

In AZ, you lose your points if you draw anything on your application. When your application # is pulled, they look at your first choice, if not available look at second choice then go to the next applicant. A second choice with a better draw odds than your first choice is quite possible to draw. Choices 3-5 go to the next round. It would suck to lose a lot of points on a 3-5 choice as those are hunts that could be drawn any year with no points if you used choice 1 or 2.

You don't lose or use points in the leftover allocation.

Thank you for the info, sir. I had three points going into the draw. I put 12A East late as my first choice and 12A East early as my second choice. I didn't put any other choices. Obviously I am hoping for the late hunt, but with only three points I am thinking it must be early. I guess there's always a chance that it's the late. Or is there? In any event, not complaining - being able to hunt a quality unit on only three points is a bonus.

There is not really any chance you drew the late tag. It would take a virtual miracle for you to have pulled a late tag. The same bucks are there early but you will have to work hard for them.

Yeah - I figure it's probably the early hunt, but that's ok. I'm just happy that I get to hunt the Kaibab. How many points does it to take to guarantee a tag in 12A East early? How many for the late hunt? Is it possible (I understand that it's highly unlikely) to draw a late tag with 3 points?

For 12a East early hunt 8 points or more was 100% draw last year with even a few 7 point holders falling into the 20% pass.

For the late hunt 14 or more points was 100% draw and 2 people with 13 points fell into the 20% pass.

Last year a lot of NR's with lots of points cashed them in because the rumor/fact that they were only going to get 5% of tags in the 20% pass. I would imagine the same thing happened this year. The NR's with most points are using them.

Good Luck

you definitely didn't get the late hunt as a non-resident as the regulation has not changed yet. So you got the early hunt 100% and you also lost your points. Buts thats ok. Should be a good hunt. Best water year for a long time. Not an easy one, but if you do it right you could get one of those big ones. Good luck and congrats.

You earn a BP in AZ if you do not draw your 1st or 2nd choice. If you draw either choice (1st or 2nd), you lose your BP's. Not like other states.

Thanks, Tooele. Definitely looking forward to a new kind of deer hunt. The area looks much different compared to Nevada. I'm really hoping the El Ni?o weather pattern they are predicting holds true and brings some great weather to the Kaibab during the early hunt. Snow is certainly a possibility in the areas I hunt in Nevada during that time of year, but I'm not sure about the Kaibab. Either way, we have great optics, good boots, plenty of backpacks and a willingness to hike all day everyday, so I'm not terribly concerned about the weather. Thanks for all of the positive words, fellas - sure makes me excited.

FYI - I spoke to a lady at AZGFD on Friday July 10. She said that results should be posted within a week and a half.

Here is the correct information..IF you draw on the first or second pass, then you lose all your bonus points, except your Hunter Education and Loyalty point.

If there are leftover tags, such as for javelina, or Hopi Indian elk tags, and you draw/buy them, then you do NOT lose your bonus points.
