License question

I just did the apps for my son and I. In both cases, our licenses are still valid, so it let us apply with our licenses that expire on the 8th. My question is, do we still need to buy new licenses for our applications to be valid? We just applied for bonus points this year, but I want to make sure we get the points and also keep our loyalty points.

It is my understanding that your license still has to be valid when the draw is completed. You can apply now, but if you draw a tag and don't have a current license it can't be issued.

If you follow the regulation, your license needs to be valid on the last day of the application period. Buy the license on Feb 12 or, buy it now and set the start date for Feb 12. Don't buy a license in 2020 as the app period will end Feb 11.

Yep, I was cornfused! Had to search the regs page by page, but found it tucked away in there.

"What are the License Requirements?
When applying for a hunt, you must have a license valid through deadline day of that
draw. If drawn for a hunt permit-tag, you must also have a valid license at the time of the hunt. These may not be the same license. Please contact customer service if you have any questions. See below for phone numbers."

That is great advice!! I know I do that in Utah (get two years out of one license). I didn't think about it in AZ though. Although it comes down to getting it in on a single day. It doesn't' seem too significant, but I have three sons and myself at $160 each so that could save $640 next year.

You can pick the license start date; buy today and set date to Feb 12. You should be able to apply early as well; the system may not see the future license but has a place to input the number when you apply. They've changed the app page code this year but I believe that all still works.

Thanks for the clarifications. This year, we are just applying for bonus points, and already have licenses that are goof through Feb 8. I didn't want to get dumped for not having licenses on the deadline date, so I went ahead and bought licenses for both of us that run through Feb 12 of 2020.

Bottom line, for Arizona, is that you have to get a license every year if you're applying for all of the main four species.

Ooops! I forgot about the sheep and deer applications later in the year. You are right - still have to buy the license every year. I spoke too soon and thought W-bob had found a loophole.

>Bottom line, for Arizona, is that

That's the way I understand it. And the license is the expensive part of the process.

So after reading this I am still confused. Is it possible to get 2 years of applications from one license if you just want to put in for elk only ?

I have a friend that just moved to AZ and wants me to start putting in as he knows the area. So I plan to apply next year. But only for elk

As stated above:

?When applying for a hunt, you must have a license valid through deadline day of that
draw. If drawn for a hunt permit-tag, you must also have a valid license at the time of the hunt. These may not be the same license.?

The sentence: ?These may not be the same license?.....

That sentence can be interpreted 2 ways:

These CAN?T be the same license

Or

These MIGHT not be the same license.

Guess I may have to call them

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

For elk only, you could apply with the same license over 2 app periods as long as your license is valid through the deadline date for elk. However, if you drew a tag, you would have to buy another license that is valid during your actual hunt. So if you draw the tag you are going to have to buy another license.

That is my understanding. I applied for elk this year with the same license I used for last years app and it worked fine. Since I plan to also apply for deer though, I will have to buy a new license for that application.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-19 AT 12:32PM (MST)[p]But when did your license expire this year? Feb 11th?

I am fine with purchasing a new license if I get drawn. But that is likely to be awhile...??..

And you definitely got a point this year from applying?

My license expired on February 12th which was the deadline for elk apps this year (and I set it up purposefully that way the year prior-you can choose the 365 days your license is valid for when you purchase) I believe the AZ Elk app deadline is always the 2nd Tuesday in February so keep that in mind when choosing your license dates.

And yes I got my point for elk.

If you are only putting in for elk and all of the above holds true from year to year you can make one license work for two apps.

If you also apply for Deer, bison, or bighorn, then you can still use the last day strategy to buy a license and apply on 3 application seasons....meaning you need to buy 2 licenses every 3 years.

License effective on application deadlines:
2nd Tues in Feb 2019 Buy new license
2nd Tues in Jun 2019 Use same license
2nd Tues in Feb 2020 Use same license*
2nd Tues in Jun 2020 Buy new license
2nd Tues in Feb 2021 Use same license
2nd Tues in Jun 2021 Use same license**

* If you draw during this Feb draw cycle, you will need to make sure the hunt dates for your hunt start after the next application deadline. If not, a new license will be required in order to hunt.

** If you draw during this June draw cycle, you will need to purchase a new license in order to hunt.
