3 of us old NR have 0 points and want to hunt antelope. We like to eat them and are not into trophy hunting any help with a unit would be appreciated. We are willing to help with info on blacktail hunting in Northern Calif.

It sounds like rather than putting in for expensive buck tags with no PPs that you would be better off finding a few units that have a ton of doe tags being available. Then pick out one or two units that have plenty of accessible public land and put in for two tags each in the initial draw. If you want to insure that you all hunt or don't draw at all, then put in as a party. After the initial draw you can put in for more tags up to a total of 4 each with all being in the same unit if they are still available or different units. 4 doe tags and a Conservation Stamp will be in the neighborhood $210, while one buck tag is well over $300 now.

I agree with Topgun, apply for some doe tags in a good area perhaps even one where you can hunt sage grouse and do some fishing. Get a PP then come back for a buck hunt.
You could have a fun combo hunt and fishing trip without pressure to fill a buck tag.

I think if your're making the trip from CA, the extra $100 is a non issue. There are plenty of good units in the east central part of the state that you could draw, shoot whatever you wanted but still have a chance to shoot a mid range goat. That's what I would personally do. I shot a mid 70s goat on the first day in a unit that had a lot of pressure, required zero points and I had never set foot in it. Just be willing to out walk the road hunters :)

+1 some do require some homework. Lots of checker board scatterd private in some areas, and you need to be early or late. They run to private, wants the shooting starts.
You could call outfitters in the area and ask if they know of a trespass fee.
Hunting doe only is pretty easy, all over the state.
