"Unit 40 Colorado"

I'll be headed to Colorado with my son for a 3rd season deer hunt in unit 40 this year. We've never hunted Colorado before. I understand there is a lot of private land in the unit but it looks there is plenty of public to hunt. We prefer to hike and glass vs road hunting. Any information on what to expect or starting points would be appreciated. Planning on making a trip out in the next few months to get our feet wet.
Thanks in advance
Paul

be sure to bring your gps with property lines. In CO private land does Not have to be posted for you to get busted. I would look for fields with does then stake out some bordering public and keep your fingers crossed that a buck crosses the line!

If you don't mind me asking how many points did you guys have? I've been considering that unit for a couple years.

Hi Paul

I pulled that same tag this year. It will be my first time hunting the unit. Let's keep in touch. I hope to get out there once before the season for some scouting also. Looking forward to the hunt and learning a new area. Good luck to you and your son

Get a BLack Lives Matter map (BLM) and a Grand Mesa NF map, and possibly a CO National Monument map.

And/or possibly a GPS w.a landowner chip in it.

Then, look like crazy @ them.

What sort of vehicle are you bringing?

OnXmaps will be a huge help for this area. It's great peace of mind to know exactly where you are in relation to the property lines and borders.

I plan on having some wheelers, but also going to take some horses. Should be a fun time!

Really depends on the weather. If the weather is mild, it can be tough to find the deer on public. If you get some weather to push them off the forest, there is a lot of pubic land to scour. As has been mentioned, property boundaries can be challenging. Plan accordingly.

Hope for some snow to push them to the lower country. However, if it's warm and dry like it was for us last year we found deer from high in the forest service all the way to the Utah border. I killed mine about 1/2 way up the mountain.

As was mentioned, you need a GPS with Land ownership and you'll be fine. My buck was on private but moved to a fairly small piece of public as the sun was setting and we were waiting for him.

Tagged, this is a unit that I'm eyeing for next year, same 3rd season hunt. Considering a run out 1st week of November this year w/ spotter and binoculars in hand to do some scouting and get a lay of the land. There are some great looking spots in that unit. I'll have 8 pts.
