Went out and tried the BH powder last weekend. Started with 80 gr and then 90 gr. looked like a shot gun blast at 100 yrds. Needless to say i was very frustrated. Decided its to close to my Sept elk hunt so i went back to my 777 load. Maybe i'll fool with it again during the off season.

I would like to try some BH209 after reading all the good reviews on it. I've been shooting 90 gr. of Triple 7 and 348 gr powerbelts. What would be an equal or good starting load using BH.

Can i get some opinions on the Hornaday 300 gr SST bullet. I'll be hunting elk with it. Only taken one big game animal with a ML, a cow elk. I have been shooting 348 powerbelts and they worked fine on that cow but seem to get mixed reviews on here. The Hornadays were cheap so i picked up a box...

Anyone know of a butcher in the Elko that would hang an animal for a few days. If i kill my bull i want to be able to go back and try and fill my cow tag without meat spoilage concerns.

Thanks buckhorn. She is not to worked up about shooting a huge buck. More just want to have a successful hunt. I'd like to be able to find her an average 4x and we'll be happy. Sounds like we should be able to if we work hard.

Can anyone give me an idea of what kind of qualitybucks are in this unit? Its my wifes tag and her first buck tag.

I've hunted cow elk in there before and had good luck. My bull tag is gor this year so we'll see how it goes

From what i've seen in that unit the wilderness is the way to go. Gets very crowded outside the wilderness area during the rifle seasons. Maybe not so bad during the muzzy hunt. I have the same bull tag. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR HUNT!!

Yes its the first year for doe tags in that area. I dont understand why they would add 800 doe tags and then cut the buck tags so much. Are the deer doing fine? Maybe the ratio is off? Good question for the game biologist i guess

Last time i hunted Idaho was 2008. Ran into some wolves up north of Orofino hunting whitetail around Dworshak reservoir. Seems wolves would be a tough hunt though. Real thick country.

Thanks guys i'll keep looking. How is the Middle Fork unit. I know it is all wilderness. Can it be hunted without pack animals? I ordered some maps of the area and will start digging into them when they show up. Does it sell out for NR.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think im going to wait it out a few more years for a unit with no wilderness. It would kill me to pull a tag and have the elk cross into the wilderness and have to sit helpless and unable to follow them.

Yes lots of country... Its tough to narrow down were to start. Are the elk numbers good in the Diamond Creek area? Also are there wolves in this zone? Not looking to get in on anyones spot just a little general stuff on the zone.
