LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-10 AT 03:01PM (MST)[p]This year was a pretty great year for me. I was able to hunt in a couple different states and with some great friends. I started out this year hunting with my kids. We saw alot of deer but the numbers seemed way down and although i didn't pull the trigger, my kids had a blast and suffered through the weather.
The next hunt was in November and the thought of snow and the rut had me pretty excited. I had the opportunity to hunt with brian Latturner "Founder" and Adam Eakle "fstop" here at monstermuleys.com. If any of you have hunted with these two, you know they are absolute "next ridge" die hard hunters with alot of motivation for killing big animals. Brians son, Devan, also had a tag and this would turn out to be his first buck. so being able to witness that was pretty cool as well.
As Brian and his son Devan hit other spots, Adam and I went out seperate way and hunted a few miles away. On day 2 Devan killed his buck and Brian and Devan got it back to camp. Day three was pretty awesome not only haveing Adam there, but Brian and Devan as well.
We spotted alot of bucks and one was a stud of a buck that I decided would do. This buck was a typical, 4x4 with eyeguards and had some awesome mass. I was pretty pumped to see a buck like that having a tag. Adam and I were on the same page with killing that deer but brian wouldn't give me my damn gun.. haha... He wanted me to pass on the buck thinking we could find something bigger. It was actually pretty funny for a minute and we both laughed when i was ready to shoot. The next few minutes will haunt me for a while......
I missed the buck 5 times at 360 yards..... I couldn't believe it! I had shot my gun all summer and knew I was dead on. Every shot was right of the buck. A sickning feeling happened and I couldn't belive it. Devan was a stud telling me it was ok and the gun must be off. We left and went back to camp. I shot the gun and somehow it ended up being 12 clicks off
Day 4 was the last day Brian, Adam, and Devan had to be there for this hunt. After that day, I was at it alone. No problem there, but I really wanted to share the experience with friends and, maybe just a little, have them there to help with the 2 mile pack out
First light Brian spotted a good buck pushing does. i passed the buck and we continued to glass. We did not find any other bucks for a while so I decidedthat if the buck we had just passed stepped out, I'd try one more time at killing one. Another 350 yard shot.
Luckily, the buck pushed does back out into the open and Adam started filming. One shot right through the heart and it was finally over. Thanks a ton to those two die hards for being there and being patient. I have never had that happen to me with a scope before and it was a pretty crappy thing. I am way happy with this buck but will always remember the big one getting away because i didn't shoot my gun when I got to camp before the hunt.
Founder will load up his podcast with the video and Devans buck. A big thanks for all his help on this hunt. I also want to thank Adam for coming over on his time and being there for the packout and quartering.
Later, Brandon
