I too am currently struggling to find the elk. I had them located and patterned early in the season (when I was after my muley) and now that I am in elk mode, I cant seem to find them. Figures!
I have been in areas with lots of sign and have talked with friends who have recently seen elk in these areas but I always seem to be one step behind.
It has not been easy getting out to my regular areas recently with all of the rifle activities that have been going on. Once the rifle deer hunt ends hopefully I can get out into these areas and make it happen. Until then I will be sticking to the archery only areas.
Question for everyone, how late into the season have you seen rutting activities on the wasatch extended? I have heard the cows go through two to three estrus cycles? Perhaps I can still find a pocket of rutting elk?
I am curious how most wasatch extended hunters hunt elk post rut? my post rut elk experience is limited but I have hunted them a few times post rut. It seems the big bulls isolate themselves and try and recover from the rut in fertile areas? Hunting them post rut is more like spot and stalk mule deer hunting.
Do all of you find this to be the case?
I find myself getting out in the WF by myself a lot recently...
If anyone is interested in getting out shoot me a PM.
