Went out this past week (Utah) and tried a new area where I had seen a dandy buck last year, off the side of the road while driving at night. I set out a few hours before dark on Wednesday night, just to glass around and get somewhat familiar with the area. I was on my way back to my truck and I spotted two deer about 100 yards below me feeding in some buck brush. I instanly spotted horns...I watched to see what direction the bucks were feeding and attempted try and get in front of them and cut them off.
I high tailed it back and around, and slowly crept up over the hill, and sure enough they were standing about 55 yards below me in the sage brush. The two bucks I had originally spotted were standing in the open...decent 4 points, but nothing I wanted to shoot. I spotted some movement behind them in the brush and about that time another buck walked stepped out...and I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was one of those moments, which don't happen too often, when you see the buck you dream of seeing out in the field....and he's standing downhill about 55 yards from you. He was standing broadside, and when I first glanced at him I thought something didn't seem quite right. I drew back my bow and the big boy caught my movement...he turned and looked my direction and my heart sank. This big ol boy only had one side. I was ready to take the shot, but decided not to shoot.
The other two bucks were probably in the 140's-150's range and he put them to shame. His left side was a typical four, long main beams, great mass, and great height. Forks were probably 10-11'' deep, front and back. If he would have had the same on his right side, he probably would of went somewhere in the 190's.
I couldn't believe it. Still can't! I have the worst luck!!
Anyone ever have a similiar experience?
