Last year my brother and I shot and missed a 29" monster. Two seconds later the buck was killed by another man. We decided to check it out and congradulate the hunter. When we got to the animal, we measured it and told the guy "way to go". He started acting really strange, he was in a big hurry to get it out of there. We thought this was because he didn't want a battle for it. So we decided to leave and again congradulated him. We knew who the man was, because we live in a small town of 400 or less people. The next morning my brother saw him on the mountain again, packing a gun. So I called the DWR and told them what we had witnessed this kill and told them the mans name. They told me on the phone that he didn't have a license at all! I told them where the kill site was and how big the deer was exactly. I also identified his truck. Ends up the DWR went to where this guy was employed (a ranch about 10 miles away)and found deer and elk killed. The ranch owner was convicted, but the guy we saw kill the deer was not. So, here is where I thought that I would get something for this. It caused a lot of tension in this small town community. The Utah DWR has not given me anything. The elk were killed on a LE area and I didn't see anything. Needless to say, don't expect anything from the DWR, but if I had to do it again I WOULD!!! I don't think this will stop them still in the future, but I will not stand by and see the heard here destroyed by poachers. At least it may save a few.
