I have never hunted unit 66 and have a rifle tag for the first season. Any help welcome and what class bull should I be looking for?

I was in 66 today saw 200-300 head. Your chance of somthing over 300" is fair but if I were you I would not pass up a nice 300 class bull. good luck where are you planning on starting? where are you from?

good luck. we drew second rifle for 66 also. this will be our first trip to this unit. my third trip to colorado so far.

I don't think you will have trouble finding elk it finding a bigger bull then 300, Raghorns are the ticket in this unit, Just shoot a nice fat one and keep scouting for the following seasons. If you find a out of the way place you might find a good bull. I believe the ratio is 20-25 bulls per 100 cows or something close to that.

Right on Gator. I seen one that would score 275 to 290 several seasons ago. Have hunted there about five or six seasons since 99 and moved to an adjacent unit. Most will be average bulls, such as 4 pts. and 5 pts, and some sixes. Very steep country and the elk I hunted were mostly close to 10K and above. The Powderhorn sees less pressure than the wilderness to the south from what I encountered.

Good Luck - Leonard

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-10 AT 07:55PM (MST)[p]thats where we will be, in powderhorn. i'll take a 250" for my first bull all day.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-10 AT 09:27PM (MST)[p]This unit can have some really nice bull's in it. 300" is not out of the question. I live in the area and have seen some nice bulls in the unit. I would not shoot the first bull you see. If everyone shoots the first four point you see we will never have any quality bulls in the unit!!!

i drew 66 second season also. hunted 67 with my daughter 2 years ago and she took a nice 5 x 5. hoping to see just as many animals in 66

anyone been out there in the woods and seeing anything? or anyone else heading there this year?

If you don't shoot the first nice antlered Bull you see, you might have a good bowl of tag soup.
