call from Ut. DWR

Got a call from the dwr today it seems someone turned in a premium elk tag and I am the first alternate. Not sure whether to take it or pass on it. Already have 2 deer hunts comin up and work is real busy with this economy not sure if I can take the time. So if you put in for a premium tag there may still be a chance.

Unless you are sitting on a pile of points you are crazy to give that one up. If you are close to max points and will draw again in a year to two maybe it is the right thing to do, but before you pass on it think about how many points you have invested in your other hunts and how long it may take you to draw the elk tag again.

I know what your sayin I do have lots of points and thought I would have this tag on the draw So I applied for other hunts/points with this in mind when I didn't draw I was pretty disappointed. I look at it as a once in a lifetime hunt and want to be able to treat it as one. But it would be nice to get a great bull and forget about elk in Utah.

My 2nd son turned in a LE Archery Bull Tag on the Monroe a week before the season started due to a separated shoulder he recieved in an accident. Maybe that's the tag, he's bummed but we'd hoped that it would get to the next in line quickly...but you know Government

It is a premium tag. After the call and thinking about it I was surprised that either the tag was turned in after the hunt began or the DWR is real slow, or others have turned it down also and it has worked down to me.

I would pass, especially if the hunts already started! Utah needs to change the time prior to the hunt in which the tag can be turned in! What a waste of points if you ask me.

you had better really think about this one, i would take the tag and run if you are familiar with the unit, just out of curiousity what unit is it? think about it like this the last 3 or 4 years the quality in utah has been dropping every year even in the best units and the season may have already started but you havnt missed much, the best part of the archery season is just coming up and more than likely you will kill your bull on the early rifle hunt, and its been a good year for antler growth! just my thoughts but let us know what you decide, and good luck to you on all your hunts! oh forgot to ask how many points you burning? the only way i would turn this down is if i had max points and it wasnt any of the top 3 units because even premium is gauranteed each year yet!!
