Question on Utah's Elk Draw

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-12 AT 01:40PM (MST)[p]I have never really thought about this, as I have drawn my once in a life time elk tag (2005). I have waited my time and now I am eligible to once again apply for elk.

I realize, in my situation it really doesn't make any difference, as I only have one point going into this years application period. But when I apply for elk this week, will I be entered into the draw with one or two points?

In other words, let's say (totally hypothetical example) that according to the odds sheet, a guy stood a 50 percent chance of drawing area x with 10 points, but only a .02 chance with 9 points. Lets' go on to say, that a guy applies this year, before going into the draw with 9 points. Does he enter this years draw with 9 or 10 points?

I hope my example makes sense. In the real world, since I have just one point going into this years elk draw, do I actually go in with just that point, or do I get this years point too, making me enter this years draw with 2 points. I understand that after the draw I will have two points. I always thought the points were a year behind, but I was told that is not the case and would just like to hear it from someone who knows.

As I thought of it, I realized I really had no bases for my thinking.

Thanks for your clarification on this POINT! (no pun intended)

Have a good one.. BB

you go in with the points you currently have, if it is 0 then it is 0 if it is 1 then it is 1, if it is 2 it is 2. does that make sense.

Yes it does and that's the way I always felt it was. But then I got to thinking that perhaps a guy got the point going in, and that would make a big difference for guy, like in my example, as it could put him into the max pool draw.

Thanks for your clarification on this issue.

Have a good one. BB

Man I must be getting old it seems like yesterday I was following your elk post on the san juan. Best read in a while. Thx

I always thought that you get a random number assigned for every point that you have going in, plus one for your current application. So if you go in with 1 point, you would be assigned two random numbers and then keep the lowest for the draw. Then whoever has the lowest random number pulls the tags until they are gone. If you have zero points, you only get one random number. If you have sixteen points, you get seventeen random numbers and have a better chance to wind up with one that is low enough to draw.

Of course, it works the same way in the max points pool only you are only competing with those who have max points. Anyway, this is how it was explained to me sometime in the past by someone who I figured knew more about it than me.

I just hope you get a low enough number to hunt the San Juan again, so that we can all enjoy your posts.

Utah450 has it right. You can confirm this by noticing the people in the drawing with 0 points. Clearly they only get the bonus point after being unsuccessful.

That's why they are called "bonus points" they are in addition to this years application. AND, in reality each application or bonus point for an individual hunter (applicant)is assigned a random number and the lowest of all the numbers that you are assigned is the ONE number that goes into the draw.
