thoughts on Dutton?

I may have a slim chance on drawing a late tag for Dutton and am would appreciate some thoughts or advice on the unit.

The archery elk hunt was a real butt kicker last year. Scouted 20 plus days and hunted 14 or better. Passed up a few 300" animals ( I wish I shot NOW!!!! ).

Saw two bulls that would go around 370, but that was it. I covered that entire unit and was dissapointed in the amount of 350 plus animals that I saw. This unit is totally verticle, there is one road that runs north to south and everything FALLS.....to the east and to the west.

Have not been down during the late rifle hunt.....but it would scare me a bit. The elk seem to hold "mid mountain" and are in the worst drainages you have ever seen. With-out the rut it may be hard.

Take a look at the success that the 3 seasons of cow hunts have......not very good!!!

If you put in for this hunt, make sure you have horses and scout this unit.

It takes nothing for a bull to stay out of your reach in this tough country.

Email me for any other specifics.

PS.....If I was putting in for a late hunt, it would for sure be in a spot that "I Know" the elk winter in.

I would take a late Wasatch tag over a late Dutton Tag.

Heck, I would take most other late tags over a Dutton tag.

PM me with any other????????

Alan

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-06 AT 08:15PM (MST)[p]Geez Alan, how do you really feel?

"The last time I see the Dutton is going to be in my rear view mirror damn it!!!!!";-)

"I would get in my truck and take that tag back to the nearest division office!!!!!!!";-)

"You need a chute plane and a machine gun to kill an elk in this hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!";-)

Ah, the memories! Just makes ya want to do it again doesn't it?!?!?!?!?!

Dropper, I can tell you Alan is not lying about his effort. He worked hard and his work ethic was hardly the reason for his less than good luck. He hunted as hard as a guy can.

The dutton holds some decent bulls but you have your work cut out for you with or without horses. This unit can be a tough hunt for trophy elk and I dont think it matters what season you hunt. The terrain will tear a guy down quick.I was with elkslayer last year and the unit can be very frustrating to say the least.Put in and draw and you will know what we are talking about after your first scouting trip if you have not ever been on the unit.Once I seen this unit first hand I knew why some big bulls can survive the pressure from archery, rifle, muzzleloader and late hunts. It is the type of hunt that can just plain wear you down and out.And that is the truth.
