Pretty cool video - some SMOKER bulls on there. Congrats to Ruth on great 300 yard one-shot one kill. That is a SUPER cool bull - very unique and will make a beautiful mount.

So NOW that the mandatory (and well deserved) congratulations are over....let the pot stirring begin.

Loved that big bull she missed on the first time - in the voice over the narrator congratulates her on not taking a second "unethical shot." I do too...

BUT - and I know the camera angle is not the same angle she has so we really can't tell what she sees - how many of us here would have risked a more difficult shot when he froze the second time?? What if all you had was a good old so-called "Texas Heart Shot"?

I would like to say that I would have waited it out like her, but my instincts (and maybe the echo of my dad's voice) were telling me as I watched that video "Jack another one in and drill that big SOB!!" In all honesty, I am not sure I could have held my restraint like she did. Could be my lack of experience talking, or just my over-blown competetive ego, and maybe I am not as ethical as I really say - but I think I take whatever shot I have at that point and hope for the best!

So what would you have done?

Also - if you were her guide and she did take another less ethical shot, wounded the bull and resulted in some tracking work - what would you think/feel about it? Would love to hear your opinions on it too.

Roy-

Looks to me like where she was hunting there was no need to rush anything-giants behind every bush and they don't even run when you shoot. That could certainly help a person remain patient....

(P.S. Sorry I got you kicked out of the library the other day.) :)

It's always funny to me when the none hunter is holding the gun and leading the way to the downed animal. I don't like that aspect of youth or ladies hunts when displayed that way. When my kids shoot their first big game animal, they'll be the first one to tell me how big he is. They'll be the one making the final shot (if one is needed, hopefully not). That is all part of the hunt. Why short change them on the experience? You see that a lot when a wife is hunting with her husband. The hubby just takes over and leaves the wife in the background. Sorry to go off on a tangent!

I would not have taken an unethical shot on that bull. As said before, they were seeing their share of big bulls.

I dont see anything "unethical" about it..looks to be within 100 yards, broadside, dead rest, send it! Those are high percentage shots (or should be.)

That was well said Roy!! +1

When it all comes down, a possible dream come true and it's right there...people do things that they may not normally do. Does it make it right or wrong? I'd say that you have to had been there in their shoes and still, you just can't know what's going thru their mind.

Well,
I couldn't really tell/say how big the Bull was?
He was close enough to place a Bullet in him for sure.
I'll have to agree, another shot from Ruth would not be ethical,if she can't hit him at that distance standing still, who knows what could'of happened on a moving shot?

Far as a Texas heartshot goes,I don't think it would'of been a good idea or ethical for Ruth, she just needed stinky's gun on the 1st shot,it would'of timbered the tree & tore the Elk in half.

Maybe them Elk where they were hunting don't mind, but I would'of demanded the sun glasses stay at the truck, you can put em on later after the kill & be cool!

That was a sweet shot she made on that bull, she folded him up like a cheap suitcase in one shot!

Hey Stinky, did you happen to watch that clip??? LMAO!!

I don't really know that much about elk because I've never hunted them. I also don't know what gun she was shooting. I don't even know if it matters on elk?

I'm a little puzzled as to why she missed the first shot. She had a good rest, blah blah blah. If she missed that shot I don't like her chances after that. If all she had was a pure gut shot after her first shot, she did good IMO.

Having said that.....

If that is a big blacktail buck and I decide I want it, I get locked in, and I would keep shooting until it disappeared, dropped, or I ran out of ammo. And if the buck acts like her elk (just sort of stands around) then I take a step or two to find an open lane for a lethal target for successive shots.

OK Roy, I'm going to take a risk here. I also don't think that most women (your sister excluded of course :)) have the same aggressive killer instinct that most men do. Instead of trying to make something happen, I think she was in limbo waiting for her guide to tell her what to do. My attitude at that point would have been "Thank you Mr. Guide, now stay behind me so you don't get hurt. We'll talk after the fireworks are over."

Eel I am right there with you brotha'.And Roy too. I would like to say I would not have fired a second shot but that would not be consistent with my past history. Maybe people can change.

;-)

Congrats to her!

Excitement may be the reason she missed and seemed to have problems getting another shell in but on the other hand she may be could have practiced a lot more. I shot my first bull with a bow a few years ago and I had practiced so often before the season that my instincts took over and made a perfect shot and was ready for a second. If my wife draws a special tag I will be sure to run a few boxes of shells through her.

Yeah, I watched that clip and I'm still blinking and rubbing my eyes. Has anyone ever used a gun claw on a tripod???? It's one step under a gun vice. I'm mean..... How can you miss shooting out of a gun vice? You literally have to pull your feet off the ground and pull that tripod off the ground to move the point of aim. I just uhhh, well, uhhhhhh...... I uhhhhhh got no answer. I'm totally perplexed here. Can someone please help me out? All she had to do was have her guide line up the cross hair on the bull. Then should coulda leaned over and pulled the trigger. What happend???? Please some help me out. This ones gonna drive me bat shiz all night.
