Just wanted to get peoples take on what is the best option for a 1x scope for a muzzy? Good, bad, and the ugly...

I have owned several, including the nikon buckmaster. The best I have found is the simmons Pro Hunter 1X32. Just over $100 and the 32mm brings in so much more light than the other pistol scopes that people use on muzzleloaders.

Crappy pic.....but you can see the scope well

Simmons??? Wow I didn't think I would get that response! How long have you had it on your muzzy? I only ask because I have had trouble in the past with a Simmons holding its zero. Thanks for the input.

I thought the same thing about Simmons, but this is from their "nicer" line of scopes and the price is comparable to the better brands. The only Nikon available was the 1x20 and it is OK, just not bright at all. I also tried several red-dots, but don't like them.

I have had it for over 2 years and it has held it's zero over multi-day elk and deer hunts every year.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-10 AT 11:10AM (MST)[p]I went round and round with this same ? last summer as I prepared for my UT muzzy hunt. I tied a few different cheaper red dots and even an expensive Eotech. Was not all that crazy with them. Aimpoint and Trijicon were the best in that category but also the most expensive. I then tried a few different scopes, Burris, Nikon, simmons and Sightron. I ended up going with the Sightron (about $120 at Sprtsmans Wharehouse) and it worked out ok. Very difficult to get used to a 1X scope. You get the tunnel effect on many. I thought the Sightron gave less tunnel effect than the rest and that echoed the same remarks from others who have tried them all. One scope to consider if you can find one is the old Weaver K1. I tried to find one at the time of my hunt but was unsuccessful. One thing with all of them is that the reticle is pretty large and it is difficult to fire groups. What I did is use a blank piece of while paper 12" X 12" then centered the cross hairs on the paper. I was able to get some 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards using that method. Helped my confidence going into the hunt. Then ended up shooting my bull at 25 yards. Now that I have the scope I don't know if I will ever use it again. Have 5 years before I can even apply for another elk tag.

I faced the same question a few years back for use in Utah during SE muzzie season. Rather than spend money on a 1X scope for my White (has 4X Burris now), I bought another gun ;)

Cabelas had a good sale on a laminated stock TC Omega with a peep and fiber optic front site. I can keep my shots within about 3 inches at 100 and used it to take a dink 4X4 in 2008. I plan to use it again in 2011 on the same hunt.

I have tried alot of scopes including 2 different red dots and by far my favorite is the burris. Crystal clear and holds a zero better than all the others I tried. Alot more expensive than the others though.

This is my first post on Monstermuleys. My question here is what optics or sight options are legal for the UT muzzy hunt? Are x1 power scopes and red dots the only legal ones, and are fiber optic sights also legal? Thanks.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-10 AT 09:04AM (MST)[p]Burris doesnt make a 1X anymore because Utah is the only state thats restricted too 1x scopes. Out of the Simmons, Nikon and Thompson... I like the Thompson Best.

I don't think "Red Dots" are legal, (electronic).
At the RMEF in Reno last week, I discussed this with a Leupold rep, and he showed me Leupolds latest 1X "Dot" scope. The electronic part is removable, and it has an etched glass rectical. A dot in the middle of a circle.
Looked like it might be just the thing for Utah's Muzzleloader season.

Electronic sights are legal as long as they don't cast a beam of light or laser. Since the "dot" is confined to the scope, you are ok.

1+ on the Thompson scope. I have had mine for 4 years with great success. I also put the Butler Creek flip caps on it. I agree with everyone else though, looking through a 1x is tough to get used to

Used to use a TC Hawken 1x32 for Nebraska muzzleloader. ( They now allow any magnification). I could hit a paper plate at 200 yards every time in good light. Remember when looking through a 1X, magnifiction is smaller than the naked eye, about .85 or.9. Still better than no scope or red dot. Good luck!

Does anyone know anything about the Traditions 1X32 scope? Traditions is having a "Hot Buys" sale that look pretty good. Would like to here some product report about the Traditions scope products.

Thanks

A bad day hunting still beats working!

Probably won't get a UT tag this year anyways BUT are 1X scopes better than a good set of open sights??

I sighted my rifle in last year with a 7X and got 1.5" groups. Took it off and got 3" groups. After that I thought i couldn't do much better with a 1X. Like to hear your opinions.

I got mine on Ebay....gunnies in Orem had them a while ago. The scope actually says "1x32 shotgun" on it. Hope that helps.

I shot my omega .5O with my new Thompson 1X scope. I'm getting a 4 inch group at 100 yards. It is difficult seeing the target center at that range. I did not shoot for accuracy under 100 yds.

Any update on the Traditions? Saw it on sale and for the price, could not pass it up. Will be here later in the week.

I have a Cabela's Pine Ridge 1X and love it! Reliable, clear, sturdy and not expensive. Nothing more need's to be said for me.

Idaho, at least for the last two years have allowed a 1x scope if you had a doctor sign a document that you had a sight disability. Meaning that if you are old and you can't see the sights and animal at the same time, your have a disability. Therfore, I've been following your comments and in the market for a 1x scope. Cableas now has an Alaskan Guide 1x20 that I've order to look thru. The only place that I've seen the T/C is thru Sportsmans Guide for about $150.00 after shipping. I'll be putting this on a marksberry 50 cal. I've only shot one deer with the ML in one hunt and I think I was lucking to hit it at 60 yards with the peep sight and the fiber optics. Would like to know if everyone still feels the same after we have had some time to shoot? Thanks for you replies.

Cant stad the 1x by scope utah! All I can see is the barrel of my gun when shooting it lets approve at least a 3X so a brother dont have to look at his barrel when trying to shoot at a deer or elk! And until they change this rule I am going with the traditions 1x scope from sportsman's guide $35.00 works good groups at a 100 yards and dont have to break the bank!

I'm going to junk my Traditions just like I did the Simmons before. Neither would hold a zero after several shots (I'm shooting a White) I'm going to give fiber optics a try.

I also shoot a White and if you can find a Burris 1x you will love it. Bummer that they discontinued it. I found mine on ebay for $125.

Try the Lyman peep sight in combination with the hooded front sight that has the cross hair insert. Feels very much like looking through a scope. Probably similar to a 1X in performance. Works good on my two muzzleloaders, but it does take a little getting used to. Legal in any state so you would not have to worry about regulations changing on you.

that sucks, but don't you think something else may be going on there?

What type of rings and bases are you using? I use the TC gorilla grip rings and have never had an issue with either of the scopes you mentioned, and I shoot a lot.
