Bookcliffs archery mule deer

My son and I got fairly lucky and drew the archery tag a little earlier than I had planned. Probably not the best year to go from the posts I've been reading about the decline of the unit. We are still excited though. We are hoping this year might be a decent year for horn growth. We have been doing all the research and planning but wanted to reach out to any other hunters that have archery hunted the unit in recent years. We live too far away for any preseason scouting so we plan to get there a few days early and will try to cover ground and do a bunch of glassing and hopefully turn up a good buck or two to concentrate on for the opener. We plan on camping in the Ten Mile Knoll area and will launch from there. We will have a side by side to cover ground and glass and also plan to venture down into the roadless area some as well. We won't be able to keep up with the horses and what not but we can hike in a few miles to see if we can turn up a good one. A nice 170 class buck would be just fine, anything bigger would just be a bonus! Thanks for your help!

It's a fun hunt enjoy your time with your son don't worry about a score on the deer you'll take a nice buck I had the tag in 2014 and took my son who's 10 now we both had a blast and it was probably the funnest hunt I've been on to date and was able to harvest this fine buck!

Thanks Muleman. Neither one of us will be too concerned about score. We both have an idea of what we would like to take home. We are just looking forward to looking over some neat country and glassing up plenty of mule deer bucks even if they aren't monsters. We don't have that luxury close to home.

I have helped on a few archery tags out there. It could be one of the funnest times you will have with a bow. I always say, the worst thing you could do on this hunt is kill the first buck you stalk. Haha. If you arent trying to kill the biggest buck on the mountain, you can have a ton of fun chasing nice 4 points all day long. You are in for a great time.

Archery guys always see and hunt a ton of bucks from big to small
in the books.
You will see mutliple groups of bucks can't help yourself from having many stalks, have a great time take a ton of pictures and I hope you find a keeper or two.
You will love hunting it.
