Huh? How does an air gun ruin a regular rifle scope?

Bluehair,
Yes it is the recoil. They have a "dual" type recoil the rifles simply dont have. The old spring powered air guns were exceptionally hard on scopes. Not sure if the new "gas" powered guns are the same or not. There are tons of articles explaining how airguns chew up normal rifle scopes. A quick google search will bring plenty up and probably tell you more than you ever wanted to know about airgun scopes.

Someone care to run that thru f=m*a for us? And I’m not buying that the “speed” of a mechanical reaction is faster than an explosive reaction fueled by modern propellants.

Hogwash.

BTW, I used to own a BEAUTIFUL 3200. Wish I had a pic of it.

Get your wife to explain it to you...
I don’t need anyone to explain it to me. I can work it out on a piece of paper with a calculator. It’s too bad more people can’t.

The good news is ELKASSASSIN doesn’t need a $1000 piece of austrian glass.

Well, the next time I’m shooting my unbraked stw, I’ll just be thankful its not the Benjamin in the corner.

I am very happy with the Dragon Fly MK2 in .22 cal. It is very accurate, will take a scope, and is easy to pump.

lol....doesn't sound right I agree.....but it is true....they break on the "unrecoil" side of the shock

I’m sorry, but until someone does the math on the forces generated by this magic “whiplash recoil” I call BS.

I refused to be catfished by the low-end optics manufacturers who claim their $64 scope has special construction to withstand the savage recoil of a bb gun.

Elk, I thought you didn't hunt? Camp? Are you a Boy Scout Troop leader??

He couldn’t pass the background check!

RAZZIN ya cat. Just RAZZIN ya. I’m interested in hearing some solid options on air rifles as well. I too am not interested in buying cheap junk, just need something decent.

If it’s only for around camp, a pistol will work great and also easy to pack for grouse when hiking. If you want a little more the Crossman Benjamin trail is a very good rifle. Just a little heavy. I know you said you do not want top shelf. But if you change your mind a PCP is the way to go. In .25 caliber they are great on turkeys, fox, raccoons, etc. just need to realize you will invest more than some do on a center fire rifle.

You Might Have To SPL:AIN That To blue!
I looked all over the box from the last Zeiss I bought. And sure enough, there it was - a big warning NOT to install it on a bb gun or the warranty would be voided!

I’m sure it’s on Swaro’s and Nightforces too. Careful boys!

Seriously??

Seriously??
I thought you were a catfisherman? ;)

Notice it’s now “double specific recoil”. I’m sure that’s defined in the pertinent specification.

Go put a swaro scope on one and then tell me your sad story of how it's ruined please!
Nope. I’ll stick with the recommended $64 trashco.

Besides, I’m pizsed at Austrian euro-trash. The $503 fuel pump (parts only) in my KTM went out. Unfortunately it’s unavailable anywhere anyway.

My son in law spent about a year trying to get parts for his KTM a couple years ago. And nothing he bought was cheap.

Nobody that owns a swaro would be dumb enough to put one on a air rifle!
Oh boy….we can have some fun with this :ROFLMAO:

I’ll accept testimonials from ANYBODY who has broken a $500 scope on a bb gun.

Winners get a pancake breakfast at Lumpy’s.:)

That’s what I’m afraid of……I told them to put it back together so’s I can bring it home and look at it. Sure is purty…..It don’t leak or nuthin :(

For the last three weeks our highs have been very near 75F and lows at 40F. Rarely more than a puffy white cloud in the sky. Haven’t had a frost yet. Normal we’ve had on or two by know. The flies are extending their sticky season, tormenting my afternoon siesta's.

Ten days ago our fall/winter good friends for the south came down to clean up the apples and prune the bushes in the yard. Fewer than last year but won’t take an official count until for another 30 days.

Aspens are late turning this year, by nearly 3 weeks but the yellow, orange and red spectrum is well represented now.

The kids and grandkids are chasing bucks and bulls and there was rumor some of them might be going to turn the dog out on some sharp tails in Idaho this weekend.

Enjoy the cocktails blue…….. it’s a perfect evening to enjoy an evening on the porch.

I use a RWS in .22 for control of camp pests, and Eurasians in my backyard in Riverton.
I forget the model.
It is not fast in .22, around 850’ish, but that .22 pellet makes a nice puffball!
Single pump.
Fairly heavy to hike with, but feels very high quality.
Solid shooter.
Hope that helps.

second this! RWS mod 34 in .22. great for grouse too!!

I 2nd the muzzleloader scope. Those trashy pellet gun scope dont stay on target so put a muzzy scope on. No issue now. I went with some ruger .177 pellet rifle for camping.

I think it's a given that people can go on, ad infinitum, about air rifles, ballistics, scopes and damage and everyone will still have their own opinion. The debate over different recoils in springer guns has been argued to death, and it is proven to be true. Heavyweight and magnum spring powered air rifles can and will destroy lesser quality scopes. Will it ALWAYS destroy a modern center-fire scope? I wouldn't bet one way or the other. I do know the warranties say "normal use, and intended purpose". They might cover it once, and say don't do it again!

While the recoil of pushing a BB or pellet 800-1000 fps is the same in a springer, a hand charged weapon, or a PCP with 3000# in the tank, the resulting momentum/inertia, rapid stoping, and multiple spring effects of a huge piston and spring bouncing around (bad harmonics) is different and unique. Most people shoot low powered .177 for a reason.

If you want someone to talk to about it, try my son's ex fiancé and competitive air gunner Abby Casey (Abigail Casey) on some of the social medias. They cover it all the time on Airgunner TV. I know they are going out to 200-300 yards now!! There's a reason the springer guns only go so big ( I believe the max now is about 30 caliber), and all the PCP guns are going up to .70+ caliber and truly big bore performance machines!! I know the Hawke 3-9X40 is popular and tough as nails in the competitive circuit. Zeiss has a new Conquest V4 just for airguns also.

Many years ago, in the 80s, I was teaching at CSU. The DH knew I liked to shoot, so, he sent me to the OTC in Colorado Springs to train/shoot with the air gun team as a prelude to setting up a shooting program at CSU. The shooting program never happened.

But, those airgunners are serious folks. Steady on target was the key. Single holes, I forget the distance, were not unheard of.

How Bout This One?

I have one. I have the Air Arms TX200 22cal with a vortex Diamondback tactical 6-24x50 FFP scope on it. I have shot well over 1200 Rock Chucks with it.
It's not fast. This rifle tosses a 14.66 gr pellet at 668 FPS. That doesn't put it in the magnum class.
The reasons I bought this rifle.
1 The TX200 is the rifle that wins the most competitions.
2 The TX200 is the easiest rifle to rebuild.
After 8000 rounds mine quit shooting. I had a rebuild kit on the shelf. It took me 15 minutes to rebuild it. It doesn't require a spring compressor.
I bought several pieces of cr@p guns. If I would have bought a quality product to start with it would have been cheaper.

Elkazz. If you're worried about them outlawing your air rifle, I guess you need to buy an air bow and take up archery!! That's becoming legal in more states now. :)

I’m just glad to see elkass making that next step towards being a hunter. I remember when I was 6 being at hunting camp with the air gun.

You’re only a few years away elkass from getting to go with the boys!!!

I knew a guy who got one so he could be quieter while shooting racoons in order to draw less attention from his city neighbors. That backfired because the air rifle was louder than the regular 22LR. If you want to be more stealthy and discreet, research the noise level of the model you want to buy. All are not equal in the noise decibel department.

Hey Bob. I didn't read all of the other post. I had a Gamo it was okay. But I needed a little more for those squirrels . They were getting out there a little to far. So I went to Utah air guns in Orem. They have some 2400.00 dollar air riffles. Really nice but not what I needed at the time. So i picked up a Hatsan Flash. With a Athlon 3x12 x40 scope and a Tatsu silencer. Had to get a carbon fiber tank to fill it up. I have my shooting bench and bags set up on the back porch. I have been taking those Squirrels out at 91 yards now ! But they still strip all of my fruit trees!

Hatsan? I bet that is made in Arizona...
My Hatsan USA made in Bentonville AR. I would have thought different. Its a 22 caliber. No paper work required for a suppressor for a air rifle. Shot the Diabolo jumbo heavy pellets. But for those thick hide critters I go to the h&n 22 cal Hornets. I have shot a coyote with one, it drew blood I found the blood trail but it ran off. It's all I had available it was at 50 yards in my backyard. He never came back !
