It could be good; just be aware that you will have lots of non-hunter company at any trailheads, etc.

    Unit 501

I hunted it twice, once last season and once 8 years ago. Hiking and biking traffic is WAY up from 8 yrs ago. Scored a 300 bull muzzleloader season 1st time, never saw an elk last year. Conditions were hot and dry, and there was a fire in the wilderness portion of the unit, with trail closures...

    They got me!

Keep it and eat it, you'll probably like it. I would suggest having some smoked. Also the fat will render into useful oil. You can't sell it but some oldtimer will want it. By the way, I saw a guy bring a lion to the taxidermist, where he met the Wildlife officer for proper tagging. The...

    CO Unit 14 muzzy elk

See if they will take you back in the Swamp Park region of Zirkel Wilderness. Would like to know how it works out because there are other old muzzy guys interested. Coulton Creek and Hinman Creek on the S. side of Farwell Mtn. used to be the best elk country ever. Have not been there since late...

    Percussion Breach Clean out

I carefully drilled down the center of the screw with a very small bit, then increasingly larger bits until the threads came loose. Pulled them out like a coil, put in an allen head set screw like the ones used on pulleys. Now I just leave it in when cleaning. How tough was it to remove your breech?

    Cow Moose 7, 8, 191!!!

Archery and muzzleloader elk hunter camps can be a great source of info for moose hunters. I would keep the muzzleloader license if I were you. Rifle hunts are later. Be prepared to deal with the meat and keep it cool. The wildlife officials will check to be sure it is cared for properly! You...

When did CO go to GMUs?

I put the question to the CPW, and they stated that the concept of Game Management Units was introduced in 1957, west of the Continental Divide. So pretty long time ago!

When did CO go to GMUs?

Numbers of hunters afield seems to change with conditions. Some old favorite places (parts of NW Co) used to be crowded with game and hunters, but as the animals moved on, so did the hunters. Other areas (Front range draw-only) have remained steady in both game and hunter numbers. The hunter...

When did CO go to GMUs?

I tried to google the answer, but no luck. First year I hunted Colo was 1965, and all licenses were sold over-the-counter at stores everywhere hunters congregated. If I recall, there were several units in place (Mt. Evans Elk Management) where drawings were conducted; but that may have been...

    2018 Estimated Harvest Stats Posted

Look at how well moose are doing in the state, with very exacting hunter surveys and mandatory reporting. I think reports like that are needed for some of the deer and elk hunts that have taken a big dive in quality in recent decades. How about replacing the question "did you hunt in any other...

    2018 Estimated Harvest Stats Posted

They have been known to issue hundreds if not thousands of tags for game animals that were basically eradicated from a unit several years past. Time to quit relying heavily on computer "models" to assess populations.

    Draw Out Report Question

The Colo computer system seems like it was built back before electricity. Doesn't matter if it's Parks and Wildlife or Motor Vehicles or Dept. of Regulatory Agencies or any of it. Too damn hard to work it. None of them are user friendly. I just used the Florida system for Boat and car...

    Goodbye Colorado.

Well, Longshot, I am a resident and have hunted Colorado since 1965, and I am feeling the same way you are. Back in the 70's we could bowhunt for elk in the Flattops, never see another hunter, and have elk sharing camp with us. Nobody drove ATV,s all over the place, and most guys used Army...

The Issue of Cattle on Public Lands

I agree that vouchers should be awarded to farmers (ranchers) that experience crop damage, and they should be allowed to sell them. But I don't agree that non-ag properties should get these vouchers. There are a lot of large properties bought up by folks that don't want cattle, and vouchers are...

The Issue of Cattle on Public Lands

Kind of ironic and even laughable (if you have a sense of humor) that early-season hunters camp out for a week with the cattle, while the elk are down on private where "no hunting" is allowed. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The water is probably cleaner, too.

How many guys besides me have been chased by cow moose in the early seasons? There's gettin' to be a lot of moose where none were 5 to 10 years ago!

The Issue of Cattle on Public Lands

I've hunted Colorado public lands since 1965, and have seen some dramatic changes in the habits of elk herds and the people that hunt them. Seems like there were more sheep summering in the high country than there are now, and the elk herds didn't seem to mind too much. Of course there were far...

    cpw predator control

Very well put chindits! There is too much lag time between biological/science inputs and the resultant regulation changes. Some units they issue leftover tags long after the game is stamped out.

I watched a rig like that go into a high-speed wobble and flip over, sliding down the road on it's side with the truck jacknifed behind. That was Thursday the 23rd of July. Lucky nobody got killed. He was going WAY TOO FAST around curves. That whole rig was bouncing back and forth from one side...

how was it done in the 70's and 80's

In Colorado in 1965, a resident deer tag was about $3.75. Some places you could go back for a second after you filled the first one. The Deer and Elk seasons were seperate until the seventies when they became combined; early and late. Very few archers, hardly any muzzleloaders, no wilderness...

In 1965, we would buy a deer license for $3.75 if I recall. If you filled your tag, some places you could go back to the store and buy another tag cheaper than the first! There were seperate deer and elk seasons, not combined, and way more hunters in the field at the same time. So lots of...

I started hunting in Colorado in 1965. I think a resident deer license cost $3.75. If you filled your tag, some places you could go to town and buy another. There was Deer season, and there was Elk season, but they weren't combined, So in either season, there were a lot of hunters afield at the...

    sabot vs. powerbelt questions

The plastic gas seal stayed on! Found the near-perfect mushroomed slug with the gas seal next to it on the far side shoulder right under the skin (heavy-beamed five point bull). All lead model (no tip). Gives good accuracy with 1:48 twist out of percussion Hawken with 80 grains of Pyrodex.

    391/461????

I live in 461. There is VERY little Natl. Forest in these areas. You can hike a good long ways down into the Platte Canyon from the south to Crossons, go over the river and access a small piece of public. It is steep, rough and the deer seem to like the other side better. There is a huge burn...

    Sorry September..

Over here on the Front Range, I found the bulls still in bachelor groups, but bugling late afternoons and nightime, not gathering cows yet (as of Sept. 13) but not that hard to find or close in on. I got my bull third day of Muzzy season. So I don't think it was that "sorry". But that was over here!

Colorado Elk Rut Activity Update As of 9-4-11

Late Late afternoons they started squawking. Still in bachelor groups and just having a conversation, I guess. They were bugling early in the week at night only, but nothing in the morning. Now it's afternoons. Took a heavy-beamed 5x5 that called me in! This is front range...

    New To Muzzleloading....HELP?!?

I have a Cabela's Hawken in a left-handed version, which suits me just fine as I prefer traditional. I have killed Elk with conicals (Precision Bullets), but the gun is more accurate with Round Balls, as it has a 1/48 twist. I switched back to round balls this season and have no doubt they will...
