    Wild horses

Start by calling them what they are: feral horses. Wish I could help more, best of luck. Here's hoping you find a way to get rid of them all.

A Governor's tag is cheaper than running an elk thru the harvester.

    Kamado Cookers?

I use a Komado Joe and love it. You can slow smoke at 200 or sear a steak at 800. And I'm in North Idaho, so in a cold weather environment it actually functions in the winter. A pellet grill or stainless and propane don't work worth a **** in cold weather. Once you get ceramic to temperature it...

If you are very experienced, leave your call at home. I don't claim to be a great elk hunter but the guys I know who are don't call much.

That had to have to have started with fog, right? How else could you end up on a ridge like that?

    Land lock question??

I'd go with soup's advice. Maps and signs will lie. Lot's of people mark public roads to make them seem private. If in doubt the county highway dept is going to be your best bet. Most private roads will have a gate, so that's also a good indicator. Landowners still have to post private unless it...

    Washington gun laws

As a non resident you're not bound by most of the possession laws. You are bound by concealed carry laws. Possession laws(i.e having a large capacity mag) are generally unenforceable against non residents, so long as you're not trying to sell or transfer it.

Pavant down the tube for deer

The study also glosses over when(which cycle), does were bred in. The data weren't collected and it was decreed that because the does fawned about the same time they must have all conceived at the same time, with no impact on fawn mortality. There is no evidence to support this conclusion...

"Rates of pregnancy did not differ between populations with relatively high and low buck:doe ratios" "his common scenario is typifiedfor mule deer in Utah, where estimated buck:doe ratios range from 6 – 28 males per 100 femalesacross most management units (except a few with relatively limited...

"But the states surrounding us are experiencing the same declines." I agree with this, which also indicates is probably more habitat(which could mean predation) than herd. As there are a lot of varying b:d ratios experiencing the same thing. We also have a tendency of describing the "golden...

Pavant down the tube for deer

Yeah, right. But at what density of deer? 100 deer per square mile or 10 deer per square mile? Or do the biologists you're citing with no evidence think it doesn't matter?

Pavant down the tube for deer

These guys are talking about how few deer they're seeing in the field right now. If there are 3 bucks to 30 does in August, how are you going to get all the does bred in November?

Pavant down the tube for deer

So where do the bucks in November come from that aren't there in August?

For all the bad management guys

I'd argue the most used strategy(and detrimental), in Idaho at least, is fire suppression. I don't hunt Utah or Colorado but those pretty cities next to the mountains eat up a lot of winter range.

    Scouting days vs hunting days?

With the schedule you've laid out, I'd commit to the first spot you see good sign of deer. 9 days is a limited amount of time to learn a new area, and you can burn up your whole hunt moving camps. You'll need a little luck anyway, so pick a spot a stick with it. Hope you get a nice one.

    anybody here get one?

Yeah, you pay for access. The tag just happens to accompany the payment for access. Or you can(you actually must) enter into a contract with an outfitter in order to apply for an allotted and guaranteed tag knowing that the outfitter is the only licensed outfitter on a given block of private...
  29. I

    anybody here get one?

That is correct. The tag is free, the combo to the gate costs a lot.
  30. I

    anybody here get one?

Not necessarily. There are a bunch of legal ways to transfer landowner tags and/or tags requiring landowner permission. There are also outfitter tags allotted to specific private lands.
  31. I

    anybody here get one?

I think it depends on what you want. There are a lot of tags that seem to be easy to draw, of course they aren't premium units, but I don't mind picking up an elk tag and filling a freezer since I put in for sheep in the first go round.

    Hunting Clothes

Avoid looking directly at animals and you'll be surprised how little you intimate them. Some say avoid eye contact but I believe it's less about them seeing your eyes, than it is seeing both eyes. Prey animals know what a predator is and predators have eyes in the front of their heads. I think...

States with points need a re-boot

No it is in fact supply and demand. There are a lot of fixed supply commodities in the world. Or commodities that have diminishing returns on incremental supply. Oil being the most obvious. And there is a cartel that effectively(not always so) controls enough output to set the price. Nature...

States with points need a re-boot

Economics exist even in fascist/socialist systems(command economies). The US model of hunting is a command economic system, the government controls the resource. Like trying to get an MRI in Canada, better get in line now for that arm you might break next year. And like most command economies...

  36. I

States with points need a re-boot

The best thing about Idaho is you can't put in for every species every year. All states need to follow this lead, your odds would jump about 3-4 fold.

    Unit 18 Mule Deer quality

I agree with most of what you said. I can't say when the pinnacle was or will be, but I've seen a couple 200" deer come out of 18 in the last 20 years and a bunch of 180" deer. I've also seen a 200" deer that came out of 13 not far from the Pittsburgh landing road within the last 10 years. So...

    Unit 18 Mule Deer quality

There are not many at 180" anywhere. The point is that unit has the genetics to produce 200"+ deer, doesn't mean there is one this year; but there are plenty of places that could never do that. If I had a difficult to draw tag in a unit that can produce big deer I'd be willing to eat it. If he's...

    Unit 18 Mule Deer quality

It doesn't take much for a mule deer to get to 150-160"; almost any ear width 4x4 will hit that. So saying you won't be close to shooting if you want 180"? Maybe if you don't hunt.
