Guessing around 25". It seems that is about he size sheep I always get. Totally screwed up on what would have been my best sheep the first day of the hunt with Zach. Maybe that is why he chose to spend the day with his girlfriend instead of going with me. LOL
Hunting solo, may be my favorite way to hunt. Of course with my son I would never turn down.
it was just a super special day. I got up at 4:00 and left my house around 4:30. It is about 60 mile drive to where I was hunting. From the time I left my house till the time I got home I never saw a car or a single soul. About 40 miles of that is dirt road, but, almost always I at least see a rancher checking cows, or another car on the road. That in itself made it surreal. When I got there I parked a quad on one side of the mountain range (with a flat tire ugh) and then drove the truck about 8 miles to other side, but, really only about 3-4 miles as a crow flies. It was fogged in. so I could only glass at intervals. When I got to the best vantage point I was completely socked in. I took a nap. When I woke up it was breaking up real good. It was about 10. I spotted a herd of sheep about 1500 yards out. Each time I counted them I got a different number so I knew many were on the back side of the ridge. Saw no shooters, but, figured I getter try to get closer and abetter angle. Hour or so later I am 450 yards. That is on the outside of my comfortable shooting range. At one point I had counted as many as 16 sheep, but, still I felt there was a chance a better ram was on the back side. These sheep are terribly hard to judge. Finally around 12:30 they got up from their beds and were moving up the ridge I was up to 19 and I thought I may be seeing the El Jefe. So here I had all day to get set up. Had a decent ram at 450 and I completely whiffed the first shot. I totally jerked the trigger. Jacked a shell in and put one right through both shoulders.
Took me about 40 minutes to get to him. Got pics. broke him down and got all the meat off him. Put everything in the pack and could not get up off the ground with it. The last 6 months I have been having lots of problems with my knee so I already had it wrapped hard with a brace and 2 ace bandages. I turned it into 2 pack loads and headed towards the quad. Dropped the first load at an old 2 track that looked like it may go the right direction and got the 2nd load. Road the 8 miles to my truck with a flat tire got there at dark. Got home at 9. Wife was worried because there is not a bit of cell service the entire way.
Just a great day, being by yourself, having a challenge and absolutely no contact with people. Recommend it to everyone.
