I am looking for some advice, opinions, offers, etc. Looking into spending some money this year on a hunt or hunt(s). Generally, I prefer elk and deer, but I would be open to other options. I do have a couple ideas already, but thought I reach out to get other opinions.

Some will depend if I draw anything, but might as well start doing some research now.

So, if you had ~ 8K to spend this year, how would you do it?

If you go to any of the banquets they have tags to auction off. You maybe able to pick up a good hunt. There are lists that show what tags are being sold at each event. We are talking RMEF, SFW, NRA,SCI ect. Some cwmu tags are offered at some dinners as well as state tags. Oh I was assuming you where talking about Utah ?

Go to the Expo in SLC this weekend and talk to Lwyk Jansen van Vuuren at Leopard Legend Safaris for a fantastic plains game hunt in Namibia. Probably do 10 days for a half dozen animals, and an unbelievable experience.

If You could draw 13b or the Henrys muley tag I would say spend it there.Thats what I would do. How many points you got? I have 17 for each. I know the top guides there. You interested?

I would go for a species that you don't get to hunt often if ever. Like moose, caribou, mountain goat, muskox etc... something up north in CA or AK.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

MTNMAN, he said he would do Utah, so I think deer and elk qualify within your advice of "something you don't get to hunt often if ever". :) :)

That said, I think a hunt to Canada or Alaska would be the perfect use of $8,000. Can you do bear, or moose, or caribou for $8,000..?? If I could get an AK bear with $8,000 I think I would...

>K and head to Alaska
>for a white sheep!

I did get the OK from the wifey for that hunt specifically. Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming.

What would I do? I have done some day dreaming since you posted this question and there are many possibilities and combinations of things.
But my top two are these:

1. A.) Spend part of the sum on a 3rd season Colorado Landowner Mule Deer tag in one of the better Rocky Mountain units. It would probably run you between $5,000 and $6,000.

B.) Spend $1,000 and purchase a Montana Buck and Bull Combination tag that allows you to hunt any general tag units, AND apply for LE permits for both species.

C.) Obviously this is not even remotely close to a slam dunk draw, but buy $1,000 worth of Super Tag entries for either Mule Deer or Elk in Idaho. Only buy entries for one of the two species so your name is in that one hat that many more times and gives you a chance at the hunt of a lifetime.

2. Or the other option I would think about is buying a Landowner Elk tag in one of Nevada's better rifle elk units. A great tag will probably run you a few grand more, but it would be a great hunt which offers you the chance for a trophy.

cmbbulldog- After I made my earlier post I remembered you already got your Strip buck. Congrats. Since my passion is for Muley Bucks I would continue my quest there. However the suggestion of a Nevada Elk hunt would be a good one.I killed a 381 in unit 111 with Chuck and Trevor Marques.I highly recommend them. They could hook you up with a tag. Good Luck!

I voter for anywhere you can hunt bugling elk. Unless are into horn porn, anywhere works that have bulls. They all bugle about the same. If you hunt archery, should be able to get a very good elk rut hunt.

8K will definitely buy you some primo hunt opportunities but will probably not be enough to get you a NV elk tag unless you get lucky. Most go for between $10 & 12K and then don't forget you still have to pay NDOW another $1342 for the license and tag fee. However, you could get a very good NM elk landowner tag in the Gila and still have some money left over to put towards an outfitter...

Do you have the name of their outfit? I will reach out to them. I tried to google their names, but didn't get the results I was looking for. Thanks.
