Went on a late DIY muzzy elk hunt last week, I'll let you see the pics and you can try & guess where, cause I ain?t saying, LOL, after 5days of trudging in a foot and half of snow, hoping to run into the migration, didn't see a single elk for the 5 days.
I followed every fresh track I came across, only to see they weren't stopping, just moving thru, all seemed to be heading south west, it was pretty frustrating not seeing even a cow, I hunted up high in timber pockets hoping to catchy ?em napping, nada, hunted lower elevation, nada again.
got my truck stuck in the snow twice, then forced off the highway into a snow drift by a trucker who thought 50mph was to slow for a snow packed icy highway?.'~ @ # : ? ?
But thanks to a guy with Balzzz who hooked a chain and jerked my truck out of the 4 foot drift.
Anyways on the 5th day I new I was getting nowhere fast, frustrated, so I said a little prayer made a deal with my boss (God) and told him I wasn?t gonna be greedy and I'd shoot a spike if you'll just let me see one.
Well on the 6th day I got a tip on an area that the resident herd actually went thru after the snow fell, once again all tracks were heading south west, well about 4:00pm I threw my hands up in the air, said a few choice words ?I'm outta here this place sucks big time!...
Got back to my truck & took off, while winding my way out, too my surprise, I caught a group of elk out in the open, 2 six points, 3 spike?s & two cows, they knew they were busted and started looking which way to go, I flipped a u turn as if I was going away, you know where they were heading right, you guessed it, south west. I glassed them and could see one 6 point bull looked to be about a 320 class bull, but he was smart and was keeping his head low and stayed in the middle of the group as not to expose himself.
I drove about ? mile parked my truck and grabbed my muzzle loader, I got about 100 yards when I saw their heads bobbing above the sage brush, I dropped to one knee, ranged them @ 250yrds, as I was planning my next move they made a 90* turn and headed straight at me, with a spike in the lead, the spike spotted my truck and screeched to a halt, they all stopped and spied my truck, I ranged them again @ 177 yards, I waited for the bigger 6 point, but he would not give me a clean shot, then the smaller six steps out as to pose for the camera with is head high, I kept waiting for the bigger 6 to step clear from the group, nope!
30 seconds seemed like an eternity, while my deal with the boss running through my head and my wife?s voice screaming in my ears, ? you better bring some meet home this time no more waiting for a trophy??.. wife?s?.some just don't get!....
AHH Heck, KaBoom! ?.I took aim and shot the smaller 6 point, after the smoke cleared they were gone, did I miss, man he dropped so fast I though I missed, I saw the heard again and counted the bulls, and one was missing, mine?.
A few hoops and a holler, the excitement was over and the work began, remember, I was alone! No one to help me with this guy, it took me and hour to ? & load him in the truck?..ahh but worth every minute?.
