I only bow hunt for elk but a buddy just asked me to help him on his late season elk hunt in AZ unit 7E (bull). We are going scouting this weekend (Nov 15) and hunting the weekend after Thanksgiving. There are 450 permits for the hunt so I am already nervous about being in the woods with so many folks. I plan on wearing lots of orange!!
Anyway, not being familiar with elk (and lots of hunters) in this unit late in the season, what advice does the MM group have for us? I'm especially interested to learn what happens in the unit after the opening day of chaos. I have searched the archives and read the AZ G&F unit description. I used to hunt this unit as a youngster for archery deer but gave up with all the development, hikers and hippies that seemed to take over the "Peaks". I am trying to contact the unit wildlife biologist as well.
