Probably get a lot of pushback on this but if you are willing to hike to get away from the roads/crowds unit 39 is actually a really great place to hunt elk. It does have a short season and being the closest unit to Boise there are a lot of hunters but there are a lot of elk up there. I shot my bull(4 pt) last season on opening day. Spotted about 300 head of elk spread out on a big ridge and since I had never taken a branch antlered bull when I started getting closer that was the first one in range so I took him. Did let a spike walk immediately before the bull I took and I know there were bigger ones on the ridge I was on but I'll be back for them this year. I was 4 miles from my camp when I shot my bull and packed it out solo(3 trips). I'd suggest taking a friend along to help out for situations like that but it had better be a good friend. This is of course rifle season I'm referring to if you wanna bow hunt I would probably not suggest 39 just due to the timing of the season.
