will there be a big winter kill in the Gunnsion basin? I have the points for a archery tag again.

Hopefully some locals will chime in, but I heard a report from an outfitter in the area on a podcast yesterday (Epic outdoors) that said the winter in the Gunnison and Eagle areas weren't severe like it was in the NW corner and weren't expecting much winter kill there. My guess is more people that have the points may put in for those Gunnison tags with the tags getting cut in the NW.

Not as bad of a winter but still a winter. Current problem in Gunnison is we are severely depleted on mature age class deer after the beatings they’ve took the last couple Novembers.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is predicted to be 10 feet (3 meters) shy of full (full pool elevation = 7519’) by July and the drainage basin’s snowpack is 160% of normal. That is good news for the river basin.
Bad news is that due to the heavy snows this winter there are a lot of deer and elk grazing along the highways. Many are being hit by vehicles.
This week alone, five deer and elk are being hit daily in Curecanti.

It seems like word travels slow even with the internet… gunnison basin is not the home to monsters like it once was. Maybe someday it will come back, but anything with 4 points on a side seems to be getting whacked pretty quick down there. The cpw has openly stated they want to kill off mature bucks to see what it does for cdw numbers we are 3 years deep into that plan
