Del Norte Bull Tag

My dad was lucky in the draw, and drew one of the 5 available bull tags. If anybody has been on this hunt in the past couple of years i would like to talk to you about the hunt and the area or if you prefer you can pm me. Would like to know public vs private land %, and if it would be in his best interest to hire a guide. My dad is in his 70's, and shoots exceptionally well but can't hike alot. I really want to help him get a big bull.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats to your Dad. I've never hunted it, but have been trying to draw for a long time. I hope he kills a "Smoker Bull"...

Congrats, I live there and would say hunt the timber company land in Smith River as opposed to public. I haven't been on the property for 10 or more years so don't know where they are hanging of late but they used to hang very close to the OR border but I think they are where you find them during the rut. I don't think you would need a guide to find the elk if you can call and have experience with elk but the terrain is STEEP AND BRUSHY!!!! So getting him out can be a BIG chore. These bulls are HUGE bodied.

I will ask around a bit because I know some of the loggers wh work in there. I will PM you if I can turn up any info.

I went with a friend that drew that tag about 7 years ago, 3 of us were there to help him glass, and locate fair numbers of elk. He did take a giant that green scored 320, It was a 8 by 7 And as already talked about it was huge. Those rosie bulls are a freak of nature. Flipping huge.We took 550 lbs of boned out meat to the butcher. We dont do guides any where . You wont need one OMHO. But its a premium hunt so thats your choice. Take lots of strong help. We made 7 trips up hill packing him out including horns and cape. We did hunt on the lumber co. land. Good luck , have fun, and enjoy the hunt with friends and family

Congratulations on that tag. It is a good hunt but not an easy hunt. All the property within that zone open to hunting is on Timber Company lands. Send me an e-mail if you want some additional info, I have a little and can get you in touch with the unit biologist who knows more about that specific hunt.
