I am looking for a high country hunt in Colorado. I am looking for a good buck above 160, but want the high country experience. Any advice on units would be greatly appreciated. I want to pack in and hunt around timberline and higher.

Thanks

What method of take? What part of the state are you looking at? Are you a resident? Would you have time to do any scouting? Have you ever done a high country hunt before?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-08 AT 02:56PM (MST)[p]I am looking for Archery or Rifle. Any Part of the state. I have little time to scout and I have been in the High Country, Just not for hunting or Long periods of Time. I my be looking for two or three years down the road so I am sure I can have some help with me. I am a New Mexico Resident and that is why I am looking for a High Country hunt in Colorado.

Try an early season Muzzy hunt. Most the deer have moved out of the HC by the rifle seasons. Unless of course you have a lot of points and can draw a HC buck tag.

Colorado has several high country rifle hunts in September. I'm a resident & have been trying for 6 years. It will be longer for a NR. That leaves you trying for archery or blackpowder. CB

Thanks guys. Archery is my favorite method but a few of my friends prefer rifle. I will try and convince them to think about bow. Thanks for the help.

Your only real option on a timberline RIFLE hunt is the early rifle drawing hunts. You will need a lot of preference points to get drawn on one of those, so doesn't sound like that is an option, especially for a group.

That leaves archery as one option: a pretty tall order to stalk up on a big buck above timberline. People do it every year, but it certainly is a real challange.

And the other option: muzzleloading. extends your range to 100-150 yards (with the restrictions of loose powder, conicals, no scopes), still a challange for a buck above timberline, but a lot more doable than with a bow. That is what I am planning on putting in for this year if the word is that the winter doesn't take too many deer.
