Hunting Kamas Area

I have recently moved to Northern Utah to work at Hill AFB and I bought a general archery elk tag. My family has some land up around Moffit Peak and Dry Fork and I was just wondering what is the elk herd like in this area, and is this even a good area to hunt? Any help would be appreciated alot.

I'm not familiar with the area around your family's land but I'd check it out for sure. Check around the water holes for tracks and if you have some trail cameras, you can set out some salt and get pictures of what comes in. If there are elk in the area, they'll come into the salt. You have a lot of choices with a general archery tag too. The limited entry areas can be hunted but you'll have to settle for either a cow or spike. There are elk east of Kamas on the Mirror Lake Hwy but there'll be a bunch of hunters too. Best bet would be to concentrate on the private ground you have access to because if there's elk on your family property chances are good that you'll be the only one chasing them. Good luck and post some pictures if you get one.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-09 AT 04:42AM (MST)[p]Thanks sharpstick ya I set up a couple of game cams and got some really good pics I'll post soon, looks to have some good bulls in the area hope they stay put till the start of archery season

I'm lookning forward to the pictures you took. Your family must have land up Weber canyon and there's elk all over up there especially on the private property. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I have been hunting up that direction with my brothers since the mid 80s. The private land has a ton of animals on it. There are quite a few elk on public land, but they are hard to locate. It is thick and rugged country. We seem to kill a raghorn every couple of years and have seen 1 or 2 large bulls over the years. If the animals get pressured, the hunt is over. Make sure you have an "exit strategy" if you down one. I have spent days packing out an elk on backpacks when I didn't have horses available. In August and September you don't have too much time to get the meat out. It's a ton of work in that area, but can be fun. Good luck!
