JR NR Deer

Hey all, I have a young lady that will be starting her hunting career this fall. I would love to hit the road and do an AZ hunt with her so I am looking for suggestions on a JR hunt that a NR would have a chance at drawing. What hunts would you look at?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-13 AT 05:07PM (MST)[p]You don't mention what critter you'd like to hunt, but if you do javelina, you both could get a permit for most any of the units. If you want her to hunt deer or elk, better start by looking at the junior doe and cow hunts. If you also want to hunt, about the only option that allows a chance to draw is a regular cow hunt, but she would also have to apply for that same hunt.

The other option is to apply for the regular buck-only mule and/or Coues deer hunts and if unsuccessful, get one of the OTC leftover Coues permits that are usually available. Some are usually pretty decent hunts.

How To Hunt Coues Deer

There are a lot of opportunities in AZ. However, the junior hunts can be difficult to draw. My kids have not been real successful and we are residents. If you have questions or would like further suggestions, PM me a phone number and I will help you out the best I can.

Our children are our future!!!!

Thanks for the responses guys. A buddy from AZ gave me a lot of suggestions possible deer hunts. Another question I have is I assume that the standard % of tags go to NR. Is there a place on the game department website that will show me the number of NR applicants per JR hunt for the previous year?

Put her in for the juniors javelina and deer hunts in Unit 18B. The hunt is over the Thanksgiving holiday.

I put my 10-year-old grandson Logan who lives in Oklahoma in for his first big game hunts and he drew a javelina, but not a deer tag, for the juniors only hunts in Unit 18B last year.

Not the best deer hunting in the world, but good javelina hunting.

I'm putting him back in again this year for both hunts. I hope he gets a deer tag but would be pleased if he got another javelina tag.

Another piece of advice. You and her come to AZ and take a one day NR Hunter Ed class. You'll both get a permanent bonus point for all of AZ big game species.

Next class, January 4, 2014 here in Kingman.

Thanks Don,
I've been given some good ideas and am leaning toward some other jr hunts. Looking forward to getting her applied. This last weekend we went out and bought a rifle. Way more fun than buying myself one.
