Another license year has come and gone, with the 2013 license year upon us let look back at how everyones 2012 went. The first hunt for me was spring turkey with my little guy, no bird killed but had fun.

Then it was a Rio in Texas
9814txturkey.jpg

The summer was spent scouting a lot for my muzzleloader deer hunt and a october elk hunt.

Then I was surprized with an invite to shoot some exotics in TX, by the Imperial Taxidermy guys.

Our muzzy Muley hunt. We had a great hunt, with great friends. I didn't find the bucks that I was looking for, so I didn't kill one, but good friends omar and kyle did. Another good friend PJhunter(on this site)connected on a slammer buck in the same unit that he had been watching all summer, I will let him post pics.

Then it was elk

Then a quick trip to TX. Shot this little buck, and seemed like a thousand hogs, lots of fun.

Some of these mixed in there...

Sheep! One of my favorite hunts of the year. I screwed up this year and shot the wrong ram out of a group of 25 rams. They were milling around after they busted me trying to get closer and started to run off, I thought I had the right ram 28+, in the scope so I sent one his way, he dropped and I was stoked. Then I walked up on a 23 inch ram. OOPS! You live you learn...
6105img_2042.jpg

PJhunter got a ram also.
9748img_2040.jpg

Barry and Alex also scored on their first sheep.

What an awesome year! Ya I wish I would have got my buck, and shot the right ram, but all in all awesome year. Special thanks to my wife! Look like all I do is hunt!

The 2012-2013 season brought me a total of 5 licenses.

Bear- Hunted the Gila and saw 1 bear cross the road in front of us but never was able to get a shot at it.

Deer- Hunted unit 27 and saw 0 deer the first day and 45 the second day. Every single one of those 45 was a doe. It was sad seeing that many deer and not a single one with horns and didnt hunt anymore.

Elk- Hunted unit 15 during the late bull hunt in november and only saw 2 legal bulls. Great and fun hunt but no elk.

Turkey- During the elk hunt I got turkey fever from seeing so many. I didnt have a license though. I was spending thanksgiving in silver city with my grandfather and decided to buy a license and try my luck. My girlfriend who had never expressed any interest in hunting "didnt wanna just sit there" while I was hunting decided to buy a license as well. This surprised me and made me happy. We sat at a water hole for a couple hours and got one turkey each. After that hunt she decided that she wanted to start hunting and we both put in for deer and elk this year.

Javelina- I had the statewide javelina license. I didnt hunt in january or february. In march I decided that I would hunt a couple of days. I had much better luck on this statewide hunt than the "good unit" hunt the previous year. In the area I was hunting i saw 51 antelope, 7 deer, and 7 javelina all in one day. I ended up getting this stink pig 2 miles from my truck...so i had to carry it 2 miles....2 miles worth of stench getting on my hands from carrying it. It took 4 full days, countless handwashings and a failed tomato sauce soak to get the stink out.

Great year passthrough. Some serious variety.

Bet the alligator, axis and watusi were all good eating as well

Awesome pics Aaron and passthrough. I can honestly say the'12-'13 huning season was a blessing. Between my brother, my dad, and I, 9 animals were taken.

I started the season off right, taking a 72" antelope with my bow.
9608img_0776.jpg

Next up was archery deer. I took an awesome 108 6/8" coues deer.
8648cropped_pic.jpg

Then my brother Tyler had one of the youth ibex tags. He shot a really nice billy on opening day.
86592012-09-22_19-05-47_806edited.jpg

My dad took a decent bull in Arizona on his archery unit 5A hunt. This hunt took place at the same time as my bros ibex hunt, so he just wanted a respectabe bull so he could be back for the ibex hunt.
8782100_1821.jpg

Then Tyler was lucky enough to get a 16A rifle cow tag, and made the most of it, tagging out on opening morning.
1586img_1281.jpg

Next up was archery javelina. I got mine on the first day, and Tyler got his the next morning.

I decided to pick up a f-im ibex tag, and was able to tag two the first day.
61002013-02-21_09-52-21_679.jpg

Then the last tag of the year was Tyler's off-range oryx hunt. He tagged a nice 35" cow.

This year was deffinetly one to remember. The year started off looking for a good bear. Got lucky after a couple attempts and Wes and I called this guy in. Neither of us can judge bears worth a darn but we agreed that it was a shooter. Sometimes you just get lucky.
550image.jpg

Next was our early season deer hunt. We spent a lot of time searching for good bucks for one end of the unit to the other. My dad and went out several times to look for bucks in a overlooked area. To my surprize after not finding a single deer in several attempts we found a giant. I remember calling Wes and telling him I was watching a hog through my 15s. I kept an eye on him for the next few weeks and was able to connect on the opener. Dream come true for me.
4625image.jpg

I wasn't lucky enough to get an elk tag this year but my uncle and my son's mom drew bull tags in 52 so I still got to get out. My uncle had obligations at home and left early after only one opportunity. But she stuck it out til the end a redeemed herself after missing a good for 52 bull opening day. This was her last day, last light bull. Quartering to us, 283 yards and dumped it with a 308! (She didn't want me to post a pic of her lol so here I am with it)
3509image.jpg

Next was oryx with a good buddy from high school and my pops.

Then after a long wait it was sheep time. Been chasing these SOBs for a long time now and I finally killed one.

2012 was a good year for us

The funnest hunt for me last year was archery elk--and I never loosed and arrow. I also spent several weekends chasing barbarys, and helped a couple friends bag their firsts. With one week left in the season I saw my first barbarys in an over-the-counter unit at 500 yards in a 30-mile crosswind. What can I say? I missed.

It was a great year, and if 2013 is half as good I'll count myself fortunate:

Why would you even shoot such a small Barbary even if it was the last day! Its guys like you for the reason we don't have as many 30 inchers running around. G&f does enough to keep the Barbary numbers down.

To each his own dmaxarchr.
I'm not a "trophy" hunter. My trophy is a DIY hunt on public land spending time with my family in the woods and enjoying God's creations. I hunted hard, made an awesome stalk and made an ethical shot on a legal animal. It was a hard earned trophy for me and I'm extremely proud of him.
If it's your view that only mature 30 inch Rams should be taken on these Barbary hunts, that's your right to do that if you want or to make your case to the game department to change the bag limit. However, I don't see you questioning any other guys on this post that show Rams under 30 inches or that has taken ewes?
It's guys like you that keep a lot of good guys from posting and sharing their success stories on these sites.

Travis

yup I can see the diy public land spending time with the family but to shoot a baby! come on. you probably shot that poor little thing while it was sucking on the tit. but ok your right to each his own, I cant stop you from shooting babies. we all might as well start shooting spike elk.

If you would have read my original post a month or so ago you would know exactly the situation how I bagged him and that he was with 3 other Rams exactly the same size. So totally self-sufficient animals with no mama. If you would have researched some of my other posts in the past you would have read that I've passed up Ewe's because they had newborn lambs with them and I would never do that.

Was it a young sheep, of course he was. And I understand a lot of hunters would have passed him up and that's fine and I totally respect that. But to try to make it sound like I shot a helpless newborn lamb just to make yourself feel good, is pretty disgusting.

If Spike Elk were legal, then all power to the guys who want to take them. They are the best eating in the mountain, which in my opinion is the fundamental reason why we should hunt, for the meat.

Now lets get back to what this thread is suppose to be about. Sharing our 2012 seasons. Come on dmaxarchr, share how your season went.

2012 started off slow with a very windy and quite turkey season, but the fall hunts made up for it!

Well, my hunting season was tough. Got two tags, Archery Antelope, L/O Archery Deer.

Here's my archery Antelope

Yep, I choked. Don't ask me how, but I did.

Next up, archery deer.

Once again, never got a good opportunity to draw back between blown stalks and blind hunting.

At least I made the best with some good fish with the family - this hunting stuff can be HARD some years.
