I put my son in the draw for just points last year. I may let him try for elk this year, what are the odds for him getting a tag with one point?

Just as good as anybody elses. Remember, these are bonus points, not preference points.

It's Bush's fault!!!

Whats the difference between points? Last year was the first year a jr could get points I think. I was thinking he would be one up on alot of first time nr applicants?
Thanks junior

A bonus point is just that, a bonus. Your name will be put into the system one more time for each point you have. If you have one point, your name goes in one extra time.

A preference point means you have to have a certain number of points before you can even have a chance at a tag. Ex. some units in CO require a minimum of 5 points to even have a chance at a tag. Anything less than that and you have 0 chance.

Therefore, in AZ people can and do draw tags with 0 points, while people with any number don't draw. I've got 13 elk points as a resident, and cannot draw a tag. I have a buddy who has had 3 in 5 years. Applying for the same unit.

Also, kids in AZ can apply to hunt big game at the age of 10 if they've passed hunters education which allows them to start building points immediately. Plus they get the permanent hunter ed point.

So I realy applyed for point for him last year for nothing since he has not taken the hunters safety course in AZ, just his home state? Just my luck.

Thanks again!

If he has taken it in another state, it is valid in AZ and he can hunt if over 10 and receive points. The only reason he would need to take it in AZ is to receive the permanent hunter ed point. Some people think it is worth it, some don't. I wouldn't say you applied for nothing. He can still build points. The only thing it may do is leave him one point behind those who have the hunter ed point.

They do have some shortened one weekend classes for non-residents who have taken the class in their state and still want the one for AZ. Do a search about it in the general forum on here, Don Martin from Kingman usually has a couple classes a year for non-residents, and he usually posts on here when they are.

There are often cow elk hunts that have much better draw odds than the Junior hunts. If you play the odds there is very good chance he could get a cow tag next year

Junior:

Check out the section on the general forum. I'm doing a NR Hunter Ed class on Jan. 5, 2008 here in Kingman.

You have to have taken and completed Hunter Ed in your home state to take this class. You need to contact Dave Williams at [email protected] for more info and to register.

NR junior's are also limited under the 10% rule for tags, but this BP you get will be a help.
