I have an old d6 9u with a pony motor on my property. It belongs to a friend of mine but it sits at my place and I fire it up and run whenever I want. That little pony motor is a loud sob.
No muffler on it if that’s what you mean. The pony exhaust runs through the diesel intake then straight pipe out.Did You Pipe It Soj?
Or Un-Pipe It?
They’d pay you to knock a hole in the block of that Diesel engineKALI Approved Emissions Right There!
Small engine that starts a big engine. No electric starter motor.Pardon me, but what is a "pony motor"?
And the pony was started by pull cord or crank. Had to get your morning exercise some how?Small engine that starts a big engine. No electric starter motor.
A "pony motor" is a small gasoline engine that is used to warm up a big diesel engine. The heat from the pony motor helps the diesel attain starting temperature. Once the diesel is warm enough, the operator starts the diesel engine and turns off the gasoline engine. The pony motor is "clutched" into the primary engine, the diesel, and in turn, the diesel is set in motion1.Pardon me, but what is a "pony motor"?
I can't remember, was that a 'poppin' Johnny? We had an old John Deere 720 diesel ag tractor back in the day that started with a pony motor. It was an art to get that hunk of iron started. That tractor was noisy as hell and had a clank in the drivetrain that would make you deaf. I can remember more than once, one of us kids firing it up with the pony motor and forgetting to shut the pony off when the real, 2 lunger took off. Usually, the pony would run out of gas before anyone got caught. But I remember one time seeing my pissed off dad walking at a brisk pace across the field waving his arms to get my attention. He finally got me to stop and just walked up, flipped the switch off on the pony giving me a dirty look, turning and walking away before he lost his cool.

Ours was a tricycle front end
It didn't pop quite like the old gas model A or B but with only 2 cylinders, it's still had that sound even if it was a diesel. The 720 diesel came out around 1957 I believe.I can't remember, was that a 'poppin' Johnny?
I have a model 70 diesel (model before 720)with a v4 pony motor....way easier to pull start.....We had an old John Deere 720 diesel ag tractor back in the day that started with a pony motor.
