ok eneough of the big stalking walking 10 miles to kill somethimg lets here some good old road hunting stories

I will start last year during the rifle deer hunt I had it all planed i would wait for day light and be first up the road . I had spotted a nice four point and abought 100 does the night before and new exactly were they would be in the morning . So I was ready i would drive up sneek down on them and let them have it .. Well right before day light truck running and ready to go here came the big hunting studs going 50 miles an hour in the big old ford diesel from the 80's at least 6 hunters in it headlights on high beam and not slowing down well the pushed me right off the road and went bailing down the old 4 weeler trail i was going to walk down all jump out and start to shooting right at the break of dawn .... well my hunt was done and i was not happy so i drove around a little bit made a turn and there was 10 -15 does and a doe with sage brush all over its head after further review it was a big buck i was shoked as i had seen these does here for days . well i of course put the truck in park steped of the road the required distance (wink) and let the stud have it at 20 yards or so i gutted packed the 20 yards back to the truck and drove down to see the big hunting party in such a hurry they had unloaded guns hit nothing but sage brush so i let tem oooo and ahhh over mine even touch the 4 point stud and congratulated them on being first up the road ..... they were embaresed to say the least .... I have many more so cmon put the ego in the truck get off the stump and lets hear some good old road hunting stories

I dunno if mine qualifies as good but it does show what true utards are about. I had a nice 4 point spotted about 175 yards off of a main highway out in some sage. so I actually did walk out to the fence set up and was about to squeeze off when bullets started flying over my head!! i didnt know it but a truck load of border jumpers had seen me aiming and got the same idea! Needless to say that opportunity was blown so i busted it down the road a mile and proceeded to run up a short but extremely steep hillside. I beat the southerners up there by about fifty yards and got three shots off starting at 175 yds and ending at 250 the first blew a hole the size of a softball just in front of his front shoulder the 2nd was a bit far back and the last just skimmed him. These border jumpers knew i had wounded this deer and badly but they openly said if they found it, it was theirs. I politely thought my barrel will be yours too but not where you want it ;-) three hours later a game warden showed up. he had gotten reports of a trophy deer left on the hill by guess who??? Not the mexicans!! they went and turned us in even tho we were still lookin for this deer! the warden who we were good friends with just laughed and helped us locate the deer turns out it was still alive three hours after and layin in a ditch the opposite way the blood trail went i dunno how that works but he was there two more well placed shots put this deer down and he now hangs on my wall as a reminder what memories were made on this hunt!

When I was young, maybe 14 years old, my dad took my 3 brothers and I hunting with the neighbor and his 3 young sons. On the way out, we spotted a small buck from the road, but he was clear up a hill. All of the boys piled out of the trucks and scrambled up the hill as fast as we could to get a closer shot.

When we were all tuckered out, we decided to try and shoot him. We decided it was still a very long shot and that we should aim high. All 7 of us opened fire. Dust was flying and this little buck was doing the Mexican hat dance all around the hillside.

We shot at least a box of shells at him when I noticed that we were all shooting high. I was about to adjust my aim when I heard a gun shot from WAY behind us. The deer dropped like a ton of bricks and we all turned around to see my old man laughing with his rifle over the hood of the truck. It turns out that the deer was TINY and we were a lot closer than we thought. My dad, who was the only one to hit it, had made the shot from around 700 yards.

I've never had any problems road hunting. Every time I go, i find plenty of roads, so I think I'm pretty good at it. But when I want to shoot something, I leave the road hunting to the "Pros".

if it snows more than a foot i never leave the roads. the more ground i can cover the better. my biggest buck from a road is 26". and my biggest buck from an all morning hike is 22".but i do like to get into some thick stuff when its hot. i have a feeling it might be warmer than usual this october. great stories. cant wait to hear the other roadhunter experiences.

Ok another one .We were in northern Idaho hunting the crafty and super smart white tails i had dropped off my son up high and he was doing the super sluth hike and hunt to kill the big one my job was to pick him up way down on the main road . i had my wife X wife now (bit ) well you know and i had told here and instructed her that if we see a deer get out quick and get ready to shoot dont skrew around if a doe get on the doe and wait the buck will be right behind her . so anyway were going down the road i look down the draw and there is a nice white tail doe standing in the draw tail up so i slam on the breaks say deer . get out of the truck (wink) get on the doe and i look over and there she is with binos in hand crawling on my lap saying were were (bit ) never did listen she yells theres the buck No (shi )i say get out and shoot him but if he flinches he is mine well she goes to pile out of the truck day late dollar short and guess what he flinched so i let him have it big 5 point 170 class on the ground before she ever got to the door handle .. she did not talk to me for 3 days probably added to the divorce you think .... freekin blond never did listen to me , she ended up with a baby spike Listen girls us guys no what were doing my son ended with a nice 4 point it was a great hunt but cost me big in the end . but hey the mount is on my wall not hers

well sure what are your questions I will start first you need a good truck or 4 weel drive insurance of course paid tall windows for good visibility auto windows and locks are best headlights cleaned as well as all windows make sure you keep xtra water with you to keep the windows clean at all times . good breaks are a must ... speed is were most road hunters blow it and being late , want to know more let me know

ok were did i leave off Yes speed you want to keep a steady speed not to slow biggest mistake road hunters make keep it steady and quick just slow eneough to see into the timber and sage brush dont be stopping and glassing if there there there there .. keep the rear views set and keep an eye on them those crafty devils will jump across the road right behind you so be ready .... never have a loaded gun and never have it pointed out a window . its not natural and becomes cumbersome .. practice practice practice in the off sesason ( immediate action drills i like to call them) now most of the game will be running if not when you first see them definilly after the big bail out so you must be profecient off hand . the best way to practice this i have found is to get 6 or more chickens spray paint one blue or red and make a pen out a 100 yards or so . put them in it off the road make sure the pen is big eneough for them to cluck around then drive down the road road hunting speed hit the breaks bail out lock and load pull upoff hand only and try to shoot the colored chicken off hand clucking around . have a friend time you so you can get an idea of total time from breaks to kill . this gets better with practice dont get discouraged ... a head shot leads to good camp BBQ. The number 1 rule is always be first up the road .. i will tell you of a 170 class nontypical white tail 17 total points using this method in a later tail

I get sick of road hunting to. Not to say I don't do a little myself, but i get sick of seeing it. But one way to look at the bright side is you know those lazy people road hunting you will never see them in those secluded places. I think it frustrates plenty of us who will get off a 4-wheeler and walk but to somewhat it is an advantage I suppose. I also started a road hunting post over at www.utahwildlife.net and now that I look at it it could be somewhat of a good thing if they stay on the road and don't get into the backcountry where the real bucks are.
