>>>>> environmentalists like the ones indicted in Oregon on arson and other charges believe such violent actions are a justifiable means of protecting animals and the environment, a spokesman for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office said Friday.

A federal grand jury indictment names 11 people in what authorities say was a decade-long conspiracy resulting in scores of arson fires being set across the western United States by the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front.

"These are people who've decided to risk their freedom and even their lives, in some cases, to end specific instances of animal abuse," said Dr. Jerry Vlasak, a press officer with the Los Angeles-based organization.

According to the indictments, the arsonists' targets included U.S. Forest Service ranger stations, Bureau of Land Management wild horse facilities, meat processing companies, lumber companies, a high-tension power line, a University of Washington horticulture station and a ski area in Colorado.

Vlasak, an M.D., said radical activists are frustrated because other means have failed to decrease animal suffering or the destruction of the environment.

In the case of animals, he said, those raised for their fur are killed by anal electrocution or by having their necks snapped, while those raised for meat often suffer before being slaughtered. Such actions, he added, "should be stopped by any means necessary."

"If that means going onto their farms, releasing their animals and burning the place to the ground, that's morally justifiable, in our opinion," Vlasak said.

He acknowledged that innocent people could accidentally be killed in such actions, but said most activists do everything possible to prevent that.

"Within the realm of some of these organizations, including the Animal Liberation Front, every effort is made not to harm a human being," Vlasak said.

He also compared the deaths of innocent people to innocents who died during struggles to end such practices as apartheid and slavery.

"There were always innocent people who got hurt somewhere along the way," Vlasak said, "but it was important that those who oppressed one group of people be stopped, and we don't see the animal liberation struggle being substantially different from these other struggles."

He maintained such attacks are effective, adding that targeted facilities often aren't rebuilt.

"A sustained campaign against a particular industry or a particular organization has the potential to be quite effective," he said.

In my opinion, to say that those people "suck" is about the nicest word that can be used to describe them on a public forum. We can only hope that our justice system will now put those nutjobs behind bars for years to come.
