I'm not sure about hype around any caliber or cartridge but I will say that the spectrum of 300 magnums have more than proved themselves over the years. I have most of them and love every single one. My current favorite is a near-mint 1950's model 70 in 300 H&H. That rifle looks, feels, and shoots lights out. 175 LRX at 3000 fps will rival or surpass the performance of just about anything else out there, old or new.
I personally think its great that there are so many options available. Sure, I could pick any one of my rifles and kill everything on earth with it for the rest of my hunting days but what fun would that be?
Nothing beats a normal day at the range where I will probably have a .20, .22, .24, .25, .28, and .30, caliber rifle with me. On days I'm feeling different, I'll have something in .26, .27, .33, .35, .44, or .45 caliber along for fun.
I'm all for monogamy with women and vast plurality with fine rifles.
In all fairness, the original 'question' was pretty dumb and I would guess it was 'asked' rhetorically to solicit reactions. Then again, anyone who still lets someone else load their ammo might really not know. -----SS
