I've called elk in with a little bit of everything (including the Hoochie Mamma, which actually gets the credit for my largest bull so far), but I'd say my preference is primarily the open reed variation. I have most of the Primos elk calls (which have worked quite well over the years), and I generally like to take three or four calls with me in addition to the diaphragm as I've found in the areas I hunt that occasionally one call seems to light them up, and another doesn't do anything. Then on a different day, it switches to being the other way around. It seems a bit like my turkey calls in the sense that some elk/turkeys like one thing one day and a different thing the next, so I like to have more options at my disposal. I occasionally will use the bite style of calls, but you can put a lot more variation and personality into an open reed call, and that's why I tend to prefer them.
