In general how closely will a pack follow elk herds 1/2-1 mile ? I'm also looking for a decent call (light weight) to carry along and how vocal are they compared to a eastern coyote thanks in advance
 
They don't compare to any animal you have ever hunted. They may stay close to elk herds, but it's hard to figure out which herd they are targeting. It may change daily, with their winter range being much larger then you would think. It's not uncommon to loose the pack for weeks as they bury in inaccessible terrain and deep snow, traveling effortlessly through drainages that would take you days to traverse.

They will respond to howls. I have chatted with them many times. They won't come in to predator calls in my experience though. Too smart for that.
