    Utah’s wolf plan

I told a liberal friend of the Colorado wolf release and she said that was a good natural way to control the elk herd. She paled when I told her how the wolves attack and injure the elk often in a prolonged fight then begin eating it ALIVE after they get it down. Her view of wolves as cute puppy...

Any one see a lion this year? Able to harvest?

In all my many years outdoors, I never saw a lion in the wild. But while watching a lion 2 feet away thru a viewing window at the Desert Museum in Tucson I saw it get really fired up when a kid walked up. It paid no attention to us adults but seriously perked up for little kids. Hmm!

HEARD IT FROM A FRIEND WHO HEARD IT FROM A FRIEND!!!

Did DWR have the legal right to sell future hunting rights for temporary financial gain? Maybe buyout remaining rights holders and sell individual bought out tags to pay for it?

No scopes is anti elderly. Many of us old guys can no longer use iron sights and should be allowed to use zero magnifying scopes.

    Knife Sharpener

Same with me. I can get most blades shaving sharp hand honing. Once I get my angle, steeling will return the blades sharpness quickly. You don't lose any blade by steeling.

    Elk management meeting today

There is another wounding argument. More powerful scopes encourage longer range shooting that introduces other accuracy factors such as variable long range wind anomalies and the MANY factors that effect rifle and shooter accuracy - long range sniper issues. I have an ethical issue with long...

Who got a Southern Unit Deer Survey

Boulder has very few deer, hardly any fawns and many predators. A bear baiter reports 15 different bears at bait site! My cams show significantly more lions that have been continually increasing over the past 14 years that I have been running my cam string. Seeing a healthy crop of small female...

    Hunting-Hiking Boot breakdown Warning

I was hiking when the Vibram soles fell off my lightly used Lowa boots. The material between the soles and the Goretex booty disintegrated. Fun walking out without soles. Lowa?s warranty policy states that sole separation is normal and ?Sole Units will degrade when your footwear is used only...

Plateau Boulder Kaipowarits Archery Mule Deer 2018

I hunt that unit exclusively as I live in it and love it. The deer herd has declined steadily over the past 10 years in step with the predator rise. Game cams and unit travel don't lie.

I watched a pair for years riding in an altered 4 wheeler all day long in archery season. They jury rigged a raised seat behind the driver where the archer rode with arrow nocked-ready to shoot. They wore in all new trails and their camp was full of gas cans.Really not all that different from the...

    ANTLER RESTRICTIONS

BrowningRage, Yes, hunter success would decrease allowing buck herd build up allowing the issuance of many more tags. Success rates on 2.5 and + year old bucks will be much lower than on 1.5 year olds that tend to act like the half tame, non-hunted does they have been living with since birth.
  16. B

    ANTLER RESTRICTIONS

The deer herds are below objective allowing carrying an additional age class of bucks with antler restrictions. This is not a trophy hunting proposal-just the opposite- it will increase pressure on older trophy bucks - decreasing their population. The average buck taken will increase in body...

    ANTLER RESTRICTIONS

The point of my original post is to increase HUNTING OPERTUNITY. The older bucks will be more difficult to take such that DWR can issue more tags allowing more hunters afield to achieve the same amount of kill. DWR also benefits in selling more tags.

    ANTLER RESTRICTIONS

There seems to be much concern about recruiting new hunters and keeping current ones yet Utah discourages hunting by making deer hunters wait a year or two between hunts. Hunters should be able to hunt bucks every year such that they can freely plan the annual buck hunt with friends and...

    Bear RAC meetings

It is time to get all the fuss over how we manage the buck harvest behind us and focus on improving conditions for the ?buck makers?- the doe herd which should be expanding in the absence of hunting. I am from the Utah south where we don't have serious home building or loss of winter range...

    Boulder elk

I have always wondered why the Boulder unit has such a tiny elk herd. The objective elk population is only about 1500 head for this huge unit. The nearby Fish Lake unit has an objective of about 4700 head with less elk HABITAT than the Boulder. If Utah is serious about increasing it's elk herd...

    Deer on the Boulder...

I spent a good amount of time on the Boulder and the SE section of Fishlake. The deer herd is way down. Even rabbits are scarce. Antelope are almost non-existant and the elk herd appears to be somewhat off. I don't see the big Fish Lake elk herd in the SE areas.

I would like to hunt mulies next winter on a Mexican-Sonora ranch that is managed for large deer but on a do it yourself basis w/o outfitters or guides. I expect to pay well but want to keep the individual hunt part. I have no clue how to look for this type hunt. THANKS

    Doe herds

There has been so much discussion about how we manage and kill bucks-unit size-antler restrictions-changing seasons and tag numbers-and on and on. The best way to improve buck hunting is to increase the doe herd. I hunt the Utah south unit where the doe numbers are down and not noticeably...

    RAC Meeting Results???

The RAC meetings are a total farce. They have about a dozen members on the stage half of which know little of game management and don't belong there. Let's change the Utah hunt dates

KTC My cameras were never on wallows. They were on water holes, trails and salts. They were back in where elk did not have to show themselves in the open and I moved them a lot. The cameras showed the bulls moving a lot. They would show up once or twice then never again at that site but...

Let's change the Utah hunt dates

KTC I hunted 28 days of LE archery bull this year. The first 25 days were very slow. I had 4 game cameras out all summer and found some interesting things. My pictures had a ratio of 5 bulls per cow. All elk were almost totally nocturnal until the last several days of archery. The bigger bulls...

Let's change the Utah hunt dates

You can move the rifle out of the rut and shorten the season until you get the success rate down to half. It would be a good hunt for big bulls and DWR can issue twice as many tags to kill the same number of bulls to keep the same objective. You would then draw the hunt in half the time. The...
