i got outta the hound business some years back. but when i was in it, most all of it was dry ground. takes real special hounds to hunt dry ground and you need good hounds to train the pups with. seems like in the snow and cold country that if a pup doesn't turn on in a year or two, most folks give up on em. that ain't the case with dry ground. might take 4 or 5 years of steady progress before a dog will become a hound. sometimes it takes several days on the same track to finally get on it right to be succesful. where in the snow, it should only be a few hours, if it's a fresh track. just keep circling and looking for little saddles to catch a fresh scratch in.
