Who here knows anyone that knows real knife sharpening skills… Not someone who will grind off 1/8” + while sharpening… I never did learn this skill and I wished I could have….
Let me know willing to travel for great work….

Knife Sharpening Didn't Use To Be Such A PITA Like It Is Now!

Alot Of Knives With Good Names On Them Are JUNK Now!

Sharp When You Buy Them & Just Try & Put An Edge On That SOB After She Dulls!

I STILL BLAME MOST OF IT ON CHINA BUILT F'N TRASH!

The Best Way I've Found Tikka Is This:

If You Have Or Get Around A 14" Metal CHOP-Saw With A Metal Cutting Blade!

Hold The Guard Up & Out Of The Way & Sharpen Your Knife On The Side Of The Blade!

It Takes A Rough Blade Like This To Sharpen Them!

DO NOT GET TANGLED UP IN THE CHOP SAW WHILE DOING THIS MANEUVER!

That sounds like grinding 1/4” + off… ?

Not If You're Careful!

I Have A Newer Old Timer In My Pocket Right Now!

I Have Several Knife Sharpeners & They Won't Hardly Do Anything With This Newer MADE IN CHINA POT!

Seriously,This Is The Only Way I've Found That'll Sharpen It!

Maybe You're Dealing With A Better Knife Than The One I'm Packing!

Much has to do with modern alloys…..I will defer to the experts I know are here. I look forward to their opinions as I am seldom satisfied with my edges.

I know you have Hatfield’s, is that how you do them also?

I can’t make biscuits and gravy and I couldn't put an edge on a knife if you put a 6.5 Creedmoor to my head.

My father could shave with a soup spoon but he never past those genes on to me.

Lumpy, I’m in the same boat… My grandpa was great at trapping and knife sharpening and unfortunately I didn’t learn either from him regrettably…

Alot Of years Ago I Had A GERBER I Really Liked!

Thin & A Lock-Blade!

Packed It For Many Years Until I Lost It In A Crawl Space!

Not A Big Deal!

Bought Me Another One Just Like It Or So I Thought!

Sharp SOB Right Out Of The Box!

It Dulled Quickly & I Couldn't Sharpen That SOB!

I Was Telling a Professional Knife Sharpener About It!

He Says:

Let Me Take It & I'll Show You How To Sharpen That Damn Thing!

He Had It For Months & Never Heard Back From Him!

I Ran In To Him After Months & Asked Him If He Still Had My Knife?

Ya,I've Got It He Said!

Then He Said He Didn't Get His Ass Kicked By Too Many Knives & Told Me It Was The JOHN WAYNE Of All Knives He'd Ever Tried Sharpening,He Gave Up!

That's When I Figured I Was Either Gonna Sharpen It Or Destroy It!

Tried Different Things & The CHOP SAW Was The Only Thing I Came Up With That't Put An Edge Back On It!

1st GERBER: MADE IN THE USA!

2nd GERBER MADE IN F'N CHINA!

This Sharpener That I Have Will usually Tune Knives Up Fairly Quick!

But Not That F'N GERBER!

Alloys & Other TRASH Metals They Put In Them!
I had the opportunity to tour the CAT engine block foundry. It was like something from Middle Earth.

A dude with a space suit took a sample from the crucible, said some magic spell into a computer, mixed a bunch of chemicals into a paper lunch sack and threw it in to the crucible.

Shazam….alloy.

The tour was spectacular

Who Screwed Who?

Of Course CHINA Screwed You!

I have 4 of my dads old buck knives, great blades.,, My newer ones not so much…

Hey Tikka?

Did You Know That Buck Knives Tried The Out Of Country Thing?

They Found Out Real Quick That Most Americans Do Care Where Our Buck Knives Are Made!

My chinese stuff must come from the good side of China......I don't have your issues.....

I Guess The Buck Knife Company Still Has Some Of Their Knives Built In CHINA!

What A F'N Disgrace!

This Use To Be An 8.00 Tool!

But Ad The F'N BIDEN Inflation In Now!

This Will Usually Tune Knives Up A Little In The Field & We Pack Them In Our Packs!

Nothing Against The Maker But It's One More Tool That Won't Sharpen This MADE IN CHINA GERBER!

Just started learning how to use wet stone. Took awhile but I got it sharpened enough on a cheap boning knife. Gonna move up to diamond stone next. Should speed up the sharpening time. Also, using wet stone on say D2 steel will take FOREVER. At least from my experience...

Key is once you have it sharpened you'll want a polished metal to hone the edge. No need to sharpen it again for a long time.

Polished steel

Everytime I Think about This Last GERBER & This OLD TIMER I Have I Wonder How Long It Took CHINA To Destroy The Name With Their JUNK F'N Metal?

The Knife Sharpener That Homer Posted Is A Good Sharpener!

Even Better When You're Sharpening A Good Knife With It!

Learned the hard way here growing up as I taught my boys too. Wet stone, then a simple Smiths diamond, but ya need to learn your own angle for your own edge. I've sharpened countless for friends and families knives sharing the same message. I will sharpen your knife and it will be my angle, if someone else puts an edge to it, I'll not sharpen that knife again. Once your angle is made sharpening can be done quickly and easily. Recreating the edge angle is what takes time particularly with hand honing. My prices are cheap typically about $50 per blade + shipping. Takes on the average 1-2 hours to get a hand honed edge per blade that you can shave with. Some steels take more. Happy to show you my method via video call too. Just takes time, patience, and a willingness to learn.

kind of......everybody doesn't get their own angle....everyone needs to learn the correct angle....and stick to it. That is what Lansky accomplishes....but teaches nothing for free hand....

The is a guy named Ricky author that builds some of the best knives I've had the opportunity to use. And he knows how to put an edge on them.tikka are you in utah

If you make it up to Utah County, there is an older fellow at Cutlery Corner in Orem that does a good job. On cheap knives he might take a smidge of the blade (which is fine by me), but on the better knives he has done a nice job on the knives I have taken in. Not much cost either. They are kitty corner from Gunnies.

Why are there so many knife sharpening gadgets? Because far too many people have hope. Most people couldn't sharpen a knife with any knife sharpener, but they hope they can.

Or……….. they listen to the salesman explain how well the new technology sharpener works. Place the knife in the correct place, push the rod this way and that rod that way, 4 times. Feel for the edge roll, strop it of with another new and improved device and your done. Kind of like viagra…….. if your blade stays sharp for hour hours…… keep using it.

I’ve always been an easy mark when it comes Amway, Korean Chef Cutlery, Liver Pills, Rogaine, Cialis, Work Sharp, Ever Sharp and Never Sharp. Hope spring eternal.

I think I’ll take Packout’s advice and get to know the gentleman kitty corn from Gunnies. Sounds like a heck of a deal to me. My wife will sure appreciate it………

Same with me. I can get most blades shaving sharp hand honing. Once I get my angle, steeling will return the blades sharpness quickly. You don't lose any blade by steeling.

I like to think I can fix, somewhat fab stuff up and all sorts of useful things, but consistently sharpening knives eludes me.

My friend makes custom knives and he can make anything razor sharp. A little knowledge and the right tools.

Back In The Day Lumpy it Was Probably The Only Way!

But Here We Are Today Building Things We Can't Even Sharpen!

……….. the “right tool” has nothing to do with it.

Just saying……. Some guys can put an edge on with saliva and a flat rock.
