IMO living here on the edge of the units if I had to choose archery for the two it would be Mt. Emily no doubt, much more variety of terrain, you can go steep thick and deep on west emily or high desert open on east emily, both have similar quality elk. We saw several 350" + bulls up there when I had the tag, I was holding out on one of the big ones and ended up killing a 270 class bull toward the end, I could have killed several 310-320 bulls earlier in the season. A friend of mine had the tag last year and passed on lots of really good bulls while chasing a 380+ bull all season. He ended up eating his tag, he already has a 375+ bull under his belt with his bow in Oregon and was going for a personal best or nothing.
If i were going to rifle hunt it would be in Walla Walla hands down, you get an addition 10 days in the season, from the 28th of Oct. until Nov 15th. In Emily its the 7-15th of Nov. Weather can play a huge part during these hunts and fog can set in for several days on end which can ruin a hunt very quickly. There are a lot of trail systems in the walla walla that offer good, decent access to good glassing and with 18 days to glass up a bull if a person puts in the time they should have no problem pulling a 330+ bull out of there or bigger. I have seen trail cam pictures from last year from a friend of a easy 360+ bull in walla walla, two friend have killed bulls with a rifle there in the last 5 years and one was 320ish and the other was a 340 bull if it didn't have a couple broken off points.
Both units are awesome, IMO wolves have had zero impact on the elk in either unit. I have found one wolf kill on emily but have also seen lots of very big bulls in the last couple years. Another friend will draw an archery bull tag for emily this year so I will be up checking cams again this summer if i have time.
