There are worse states than Utah. Change scares people who have been playing the game for 20+ years a lot more than it does younger people who are just getting started and will probably never draw a limited entry tag as a result of bonus point accumulation. I have 15 points for elk and 13 for mountain goat so I don't want any major changes until after I draw both.

I like the idea of erasing points after three years of not applying, but in Utah five might be a better number since a lot of the hunters are gone on missions for two years anyway.

Just my thoughts. But I don't know anything.

Dillon, I have always held the opinion that a point system creates an entitlement mentality. Management schemes follow.

Take Bessy for example, the unlucky SOB has been chasing the dangling carrot for two decades in the hope of a super premium payout. He doesn't want bull tags to increase or age class to decrease on his unit, even if it means a cow slaughter every year. Long term this creates Anthro and Wasatch fiascos.

Bull tags are based on age class, if there is an increase it is to get down to age class and then they'll dry up.

Age objectives go down on units where they don't want elk. Across the board, no, the tag pimps that make up the elk committee will never cut their own throats.

Cow slaughters will happen every year as long as we manage to benefit dudes that have been waiting for 20 years.

Anthro and the Wasatch are the result of whacking cows to appease landowners and dudes that have been waiting 20 years to draw. If you think this sucks for elk, give it a few years till the Lumpy / SFW deer plan catches up. It's called fecundity, do a bit of reading.

Why should you wait 20 years building points to draw a tag when WE ALL should have the option of drawing every year if we are lucky enough?? It's a pyramid scheme that reinforces the SFW philosophy of strangling access to a resource. The other part of the SFW philosophy says that if you can scratch enough big checks, you can hunt stinkies every year. You can have all my empties if it will get you a tag my friend.

I'm saying run a three to five year period for max point holders to draw and then bonus points and waiting periods cease to exist.

Straight luck of the draw system with no waiting periods. If you draw back to back or three years in a row, good for you, if you are unlucky and never draw, then I guess it would suck to be you. Either way we are all on an equal playing field every year. No entitlements and we can be done managing every species for the benefit of one small group, max point holders.
