Is it still a good idea to build points as a NR? I know, Huntin fool and many others say 'APPLY apply apply'. But Wyoming is looking at reducing tags to NR., Arizona is trying to make it so random draw has a chance. States that do have an established system, why start now? We are so far behind in the point system.
My son is 12 now with zero points. I've built points in 6 states the last 10 years. I'm still not sniffing a premium tag as a NR in those states. I try to think I need to apply for him now, but by the time I pay preference points and app fees in 6 states for 2 of us, I might as well go on a guided hunt or buy a landowner tag every other year! If i do apply, what are the odds that he ever draws? 0.1%?
I bet more states change and allot more tags in a random draw in coming years as more and more people drop out of the bonus point (donation to fish and game) pool. 10 years ago I hated Idaho's system, now it's the only one I feel like I have a chance. too bad they have wolves.
